Friday, September 21, 2012 9:16:15 PM I got to play around with liquid nitrogen every day in my postgrad days. Our local beer store never had my favourite beer in the cooler. Best way to chill a bottle of beer, pretty f*cking fast, that sh*t's at -196C. Just be sure you put on the mitts before you drink it...

Friday, September 21, 2012 8:28:31 PM look, an expensive mess! Actually, it was amazingly cheap. That was less than a dollar's worth of liquid nitrogen, the water bottle was free, and the trash can and the ping-pong balls weren't damaged. Also, there was nothing to clean up afterwards -- just pick up the ping-pong balls and maybe a few stray shreds of water bottle. Everything else would evaporate. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 7:59:37 PM @TadnJess Schools get to do all sorts of illegal things. Some work with nuclear material, others have students cut up dead bodies. I personally went to a cooking school where they gave wine to 18 year olds. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 7:23:36 PM And that, friends, is why you don't shove a litre bottle of liquid nitrogen up your arse. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 6:42:38 PM He-he,I wonder if he had to remove the cap of that bottle from being embedded in the ceiling. I'm pretty sure here in NY that is considered a bomb. I know it is illegal in NY to use dry ice to do the same thing. I think it has to do with the shrapnel created. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 4:10:46 PM in college, I worked in a lab where one of the grad students used liquid nitrogen in the process to create a super vacuum. When he had finished that day's experiments it was late at night when the building was basically empty except for us. It was fun to see him throw the liquid nitrogen that was left down the hallway and fog it all up. BTW- don't think you can quick cool a can of pop in liquid nitrogen. It pushes all the fizz out and you're left with a flat Diet Coke. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 4:07:03 PM then he played the killjoy and instructed them to write out all the physical equations that calculate the forces involved in the thermodynamics of the warm water on the liquid nitrogen phase transition, exploding forces of the plastic bottle, how that translated into the vertical propulsion of the garbage can and the trajectories of the ping pong balls. |

Friday, September 21, 2012 2:36:59 PM The technical name for what just happened is called a BLEVE (or Blevy), Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion. Thankfully this was the non-flammable type. This is why you stay far far away from any pressurized vessel that's on fire, like a derailed tanker car, oxy/acetylene tanks, propane tanks, etc... |
