As evidenced by the comments below, it doesn't matter how many studies show this blatantly obvious fact. The anti-science zealots will still screech about the supposed benefits of organic food, based on nothing but their feelings and anecdotal "evidence".

FYI, they'll also ignore the settled science proving that vaccines are safe and that global warming is a hoax. Facts just get in the way of their dogmatic religious zealotry.

Nutritionally, the only difference that has ever been reported between organic and non-organic foods is that some plants produce more antioxidants when they have to fight off pests and disease without chemical aid. This is possibly significant, but you can get the same amount of antioxidant more cheaply by buying non-organic fruit and eating more of it. (Also, in meat, there's the difference in fat types between grass- and grain-fed animals, but that's not quite the same thing as organic vs non-organic production.)

So, the only health difference is the presence of additives such as pesticides, antibiotics, etc. Officially, all of these have been approved as safe to eat at concentrations that might be found on food. There are certainly reasons to be skeptical of such claims, but it isn't that surprising to discover that in actual human diets, any health effects of approved safe pesticide dosages are statistically insignificant. That's what safety laws are designed to ensure!

They've ignored many of the ethical aspects of organic food production; with organic eggs and chicken, pork, beef and milk for example, the benefits of a happier better looked after animal is really at the core. Also, with eggs, you can always tell the difference between free range and battery farmed; the colour of the yolk is a big clue.

Obviously an organic carrot and a regular carrot are going to be nutritionally the same. Who said organically food was more nutritious? It has less pesticides and is usually fresh because of less preservatives, therefore generally tastes better.
Also, buying local farm products is still extremely important for our economy, nothing to do with health or environment.
Also, organic food technically isn't better for the environment by some standards, yet is better in others. It requires more natural resources but also contaminates our environment less.

Stanford, I could have told you that. It's not so much that they arent different, it is that the organic market is so heavily unregulated that practically anyone can slap an organic sticker on there and say its organic. So your controls and test items can be easily contaminated by this. If I want food without poison in it, I might just buy it. Also Nickel2, the term "organic" is really just a borrowed term, anything living is organic, by definition.

For me, organic tastes a million times better than regular foods; however regular foods taste better on my wallet.

People need to realize that just because the food comes from "organic farms" doesn't mean it's pesticide free. They still use pesticides derived from natural sources, they don't use synthetic pesticides. In some cases, the natural, or "organic" pesticides, can be more harmful to the environment than synthetic pesticides.

Organic food = food that comes from carbon based compounds.
Human race = life-form structured on carbon based compounds.
Global warming caused by the use of carbon-based compounds.

Another benefit of buying at a farmer's market is that the produce is fresher, so it also lasts longer once you get it home.

Not here! I have to get gluten free bread and it's 1.50 cheaper at Whole Foods then trader joes! Same goes for my flours. Maybe it's just where I am.

1. it has already been pointed out that this study was seriously flawed.
2. this study only looked at the nutrient values of the two foods and did not take into account the effect of chemical additive, steriod, antibitotics and pesticides found in conventional food.
3. eating organix is about avoiding pesticides, steriods and other cehmicals in what is called conventional food, not about increased nutrients.

I will continue to eat organic because I do not want chemical that were originally used in WWI as weapons AKA pesticides, in my body. Oh yes, that's right, pesticides ARE made from the same chemicals Germany used as weapons in WW1, that is a FACT.

If that were true, farmers would farm organic because it would be more profitable and they would get larger yields, but they don't.

I won't deny they are healthier because they contain less alien chemicals, but it's harder to feed a larger population using those methods...especially with rapid urbanization in the 3rd world.

Before the Green Revolution, most food was (relatively) organic and a mass die-off was predicted. The Green Revolution saved possibly a billion lives or so with significantly higher yields. These higher yields were caused by gene selection, synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other things like this. Basically, the opposite of the organic food movement.

So basically, organic is healthier, more expensive, and has lower yields. Green Revolution foods are full of chemicals, cheap, and are what have sustained today's large population bubble.

I prefer to grow my own or go to the local farmer's market wich is usually a hell of a lot cheaper than the grocery store..I buy my veggies in the store when it is winter ,and I do not know what it is but the Amish must have magical growing powers because they can grow some awesome tomatoes..There has been many times I have walked down to the farmers market on lunch and bought one giant tomato from the Amish folk while everyone eles is pooling in for McDonald's..

The opposite is true. Small traditional organic farms are much more sustainable and healthier. Large farming operations only plant one crop in an entire field, whereas organic farms tend to farm with mixed crops which minimizes disease and pests. All the big salmonella produce outbreaks occur due to the dense single crop farming. Also, farming just one type of seed and limiting the diversity of options also because entire industries are based on one breed of plant. Research banana farming. Every 50 years or so the breed of bananas changes because the previous one was destroyed completely by disease.

I buy my produce from the farmer's market based on taste. Not whether it's organic or not.
