It takes power (an electro-mag) to start it. You could do it with a cycling armature and a regular magnet.

99% sure there's a motor in the middle. No other reason for it to be that thick there, especially since less weight would let it turn faster.

Should make the rotor, at least the center part if the copper is necessary, out of clear plastic.

Wonder what he was doing at the end...

umm none of these are WORKING.. the wheel one where they move the magnet back out at the end of rotation looks interesting.. if they could make a device built in that mechanically moves the magnet at the end it would work.. my guess is that it would probly take more energy then that thing has behind it to do so.. so in conclusion none of these work.. bye

"In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!"
LOLZ! @FoolsPrussia! Outstanding! You've made my day!

Right you are @OldOllie! (just ignore @madest, he's stoned again, eh?) I wonder why they didn't use his 3rd album:
Magnetic Fields (Les Chants Magnétiques)

I think one is "allowed" to get the machine started, but then it needs to produce "work" without stopping, or even slowing down... @mystery08 it needs to be "perpetual" and never stop!

Yeah... doubters would be surprised. While... yes... his/her inventions do lack what would be considered perpetual motion, but I believe they move us closer in that direction. I used to mess around with magnets and toy with the idea, but this person has conviction. That's for sure.

using magnets do not make this a perpetual motion machine

" When it comes to beer, gravity doesnt applies "

Oh, is that why it sped up to a maximum speed? According to what I saw in the video, that thing would never stop. The first thing to wear down would probably be the friction points between all the moving parts.

@The magnet is being demagnetized so it will eventually stop and you will need to spend about 100 times the energy you gained manufacturing a new magnet.

Magnets only lose about 1% of their power per DECADE. I think he'll be good to go for a while.

I enjoyed the 80s sci-fi movie music :D

That was Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene - Oxygene, Pt. 4 (1976).

And it's not perpetual motion. By moving the magnet in and out with his hand, he was putting energy into the system. Without that, it wouldn't be able to keep moving even with no load. By using energy from the rotating magnet to lift the other magnet, the system would eventually run down. I would wager if you were to count frames between the magnet dropping, you would find it slowing down, that is unless they slowed the frame rate of the camera while they were filming it.

Oh, and madest, I would like to cordially invite you to eat a steaming plate of fresh pig $#!+.

@patchouly
I thought that too, but as we continue to develop stronger and stronger magnets mightn't this be "proof of concept" at least?

@chalket: That would just delay how long it would take to stop, but hey, the longer it runs the better right? angrynerd explained it well enough.

It is cool, but as soon as you strap a generator to it, the magnetic resistance of the generator will drain the kinetic energy and eventually stop it from turning.

Sorry folks. The laws of physics still stand. No free energy here.

patchouly nailed it.

@RickS: "It is getting energy from Gravity"
Gravity is not an energy source. There is gravitational potential energy, but would be useless for this design as any motion gained from the falling side is equal to the potential gained on the rising side.

Perpetual motion machines are impossible, I can't believe people are STILL at this.

This is actually a pretty beautiful design, but yes the laws of thermodynamics still apply.

"just that it can run itself continuously without energy input, which this appears to be doing. "

Technically, it's not. It is getting energy from Gravity as the bar magnets falls down.

Also, don't show this to Insane Clown Posse, it will freak them right out!

No, it can't work. It violates the second law of thermodynamics.

@MrTwidget, when subjected to a changing magnetic field like the magnets are here, they lose their magnetism much faster.

'Over Unity' is a pipe dream, nothing more.
