If pit bulls are so sweet and gentle, why is it that pit bulls are involved in more than half of all dog attack fatalities (59%) with rottweilers a distant second (14%)? source

scuzoid. you do know that, depending on the circumstances, you can still get into a poo ton of trouble should your dog ever harm someone who is just minding their own buisness...if they are walking in front of your house just to walk down the street, let alone go to their own home, and your dog attacks because they "didn't know how to ask" that's on you. you get fined and/or do time and your dog gets put down :| thats why you train dogs to follow your commands. so poo like this doesn't happen.

When I was a kid we had a half breed that used a boat anchor as a chew toy. However it was great with people, just not other animals.

@Scuzoid: I don't care that you exaggerated it to the point of a baby "breaking in", you're saying that if a child (or adult or anything else) wandered onto your property you would expect your dog to kill it. What the f*ck is wrong with you?

@Scuzoid: Way to double down on one of the most retarded statements I've seen on I-A-B. Trust me, you're doing a lot to change this silly perception I have that some pit bull owners are so full of swagger about the dangerous traits of their dogs that they endanger the innocents around them.

Still glad you're not my neighbor.

I don't understand why people don't get that pits were in fact trained to be vicious. Their only sport was KILLING and mauling animals. Bear and bull baiting, anybody?

Power breeds like Rotties, Pits, etc. need to be extremely regulated, and the owners themselves need to be licensed and evaluated on a regular basis. Cesar Milan had it right when he said that power breeds should only be handled by extremely well-trained handlers.

And no, the pit wasn't bred as a family dog. Get a Shih Tzu.

Are the three of you REALLY that daft? Babies don't fraking break into houses. Use your fraking heads. The hyperbole was used because sarah somehow can't tell what exactly a dogs job is, and seems to think a pit and/or any dog should be attacking babies whence doing it's job.

Feel like I'm talking to teenagers most of the time here.

"If a baby breaks into my house, yes, the dog should attack it just as he should an adult."

Woohoo! Yes, it's very important to you that any neighbor's baby, should it somehow wander into your yard or house, be turned into so much hamburger by your pit bull. Point noted. Glad you're not my neighbor.

It's the Mail so, the actual story must be: "Kittens up for adoption at the shelter..."

"So if a dog attacks a baby it's fine because it's just doing it's job of attacking anything it doesn't recognize?"

Dogs can identify species they have past experience with. Regardless of age. IF it attacks a baby, it'll attack an adult. IF it attacks an adult, YOU messed up when training it.

"Nobody should own an animal whose natural behavior is to attack anything that it's unfamiliar with."

Because that's exactly what I said /sarc. If a baby breaks into my house, yes, the dog should attack it just as he should an adult. Come into my house/yard without me being aware, the dog, regardless of breed, should damn well do something about that.

"Seriously, the people who own pitbulls sound like they're trying to defend the innocence of a wild goddamn animal."

And the people who talk about how dangerous pit's are buy aussie shephards only to neglect the animal and wonder why IT bit someone in the family.

"see what it is capable of? No, you're a fool. The dog is doing his job by taking care of ANY foreign threats to his and his family's safety. ANY good dog should do the same, be it a pit/rott/dachshund."

So if a dog attacks a baby it's fine because it's just doing it's job of attacking anything it doesn't recognize? How is that even remotely acceptable? Nobody should own an animal whose natural behavior is to attack anything that it's unfamiliar with.
Seriously, the people who own pitbulls sound like they're trying to defend the innocence of a wild goddamn animal. "It's not the tigers fault, we just didn't train it well enough to stop it from eating babies!"

Even IF the average pitbull is as gentle and loving as a kitty cat, it's still closer to owner a goddamn tiger. They are far too powerful for their own good.

Every time pitbulls or rotties come up in a dog attack story, attack dog owners complain that THEIR dogs are well trained, big fluffy babies that wouldn't hurt a dog biscuit. Funny thing is that when there's a deadly attack by one of these bred-to-kill animals, the owner is usually one of these people, standing there tearfully and trying to comprehend why dear Woofy would tear the arm off their baby granddaughter.
I know some of these dogs are great pets (I've known a few), but you really don't know where the button is, or how it can be pushed, that makes some of them turn very dangerous. Don't tell me it's all in the training, because it isn't.

Any large, powerful dog could have done that damage, not just that one breed.

Badly trained animals are dangerous, period.

I've got no problem with people who own pit bulls, as long as you understand that it will get a bullet in the head the moment it decides to threaten me or mine. I'm 3 for 3, so far.
