Check out Penn & Teller's BS episode about Mt. Rushmore. It's very informative.

in 2004 Gas was found on the res and we had to fight for four yaers to keep what was owers.
whats funny is i temped at QEP Resources Inc a yaers ago.

You are correct, I was looking up the Crazy Horse memorial, not Sitting Bull. I used the wrong name. Good catch.

However, while the Lakota might not have held the black hills in the 1700s the hills were given to them under the treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868. Which lasted exactly as long as it took white people to find gold there and start violating it.

I'm not trying to sound like an expert. I had passing knowledge of all this, but I'm using this thread as an excuse to google-fu.

"Didn't he have something to do with the area being a park and not becoming a city now?"

That may have been, but by that rational, both the artist and the major financial contributors to to Mount Rushmore should have been up there as well. He wasn't a particularly good President, as it turns out. And the more I learn about Lincoln, the more I learn that he wasn't all that great either. He wasn't even a proponent of abolition, he just wanted to keep the Union together. And I can tell you that many in the North now regret having won that war.

The reason it wasn't like that was geology. The same reason the sitting bull project is running into problems. It would just cost way to much to maintain the monument due to the veins of easily weathered rock that runs through out that area.

Unfortunately the Sitting Bull monument is also being carved against the wishes of the Lakota and Sitting Bull's direct descendants.

I'd rather see the Sitting Bull monument finished.

Actually, what it should have looked like was a mountain. The black hills belonged to the Lakota, up until congress took it away so they could build a giant tourist attraction.

They did try to give them money, at least, but it was refused.

Can't decide whether this looks tackier than it is now.

Either way, it was a bad move.

Link: What Mt. Rushmore Should Have Looked Like [Pic] [Rate Link] - Lack of funds forced the carving to end in October 1941, but this is what it should have looked like. It cost $989,992.
