Matwix_2004 - we cannot say that it is an inefficient helicopter as we don't know if the blades are generating lift.

Hovercraft operate with propellers forcing air through and down - causing an air cushion - the sheer mass and volume of air being moved is what causes the craft to 'float'

Helicopters have rotors that generate lift through aerodynamic principles (speed of air moving over a curved surface generates a lower pressure - generates lift) They also are subject to ground effect at very low altitude however they fly because the rotors generate lift, not because they shift huge volumes of air downwards.

So - given the blades in this contraption are enclosed I doubt they are generating lift, they are operating on ground effect, which means it maximum altitude will be extremely limited.

Why don't the get someone like Ken Block or Travis P. to test it then we'll really know how the project is coming along.

wibble4321 - Then one could say that it's just a very inefficient helicopter. And the landing struts were only six inches off the ground, yes, but it wouldn't be too hard to make them fold in, almost doubling how high it is able to actually fly.

Until they get more than 6" off the ground how is it not just a very inefficient hovercraft?

They need to get elevation beyond where ground effect has material impact to prove the concept.

WANT

Also, couldn't that torque be countered by designing one of the turbines to spin the opposite way?
