Because it's not free to make and distribute.
Capitalism increases the prices as well, of course, since the power companies exist for the purpose of transferring money from customers to owners, but in most cases it's only a small part of the price. Here in the UK, for example, power company profits account for about 5% of the cost.
It's currently fashionable to ascribe various miracles to Tesla, including generating and distibuting electricity by mysterious unexplained and apparently impossible super technology (i.e. magic) at no cost to anyone, but that's just a modern reframing of age-old traditions of belief. |
