Saturday, August 18, 2012 2:48:44 AM Carmium, she's pretty, not anorexic! I don't feel religion working for the "betterment of mankind" really worked out that way. Christianity, in particular, just seems like we're trying to put off our own responsibilities on others. I don't feel praying to some most-likely-non-existent god is very productive or helpful. It makes the individual feel better about his or herself, but it doesn't present any tangible gain. Science, however, has increased our lifespans and generally, improved our quality of life. I'm sitting in air conditioning because someone invented it, not because someone prayed for it. Who says science doesn't bring joy? It brings passion and love and wonderment to our world. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 3:13:58 PM patchgrabber: But that's exactly the sense i'm using it, religion that works for the betterment of mankind, and despite all odds persists through love, honour, truth, pureness, and righteousness. Without this, mankind will fall into a prejudical, hateful, and judgemental way, where even science will be used to further that. We can see something like this happening today, even this thread, with it's angry and prejudidal posts. Plus, look at how scientific advancements have brought us tablets and phones. But these devices are made for entertainment, and to earn money. It's a testament to our time, because if science was truly guided as it should be, the focus would have the same zest for helping the deaf hear, helping the blind see, helping the lame walk, and helping the weak to be strong. These have taken a back seat in the pursuit of the $. Because science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 2:55:47 PM photomstr: what's the alternative, hatred and prejudice your way? Religion isn't going anywhere, those who can't accept it will need to learn to live with it. After all science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 7:27:32 AM science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. Quote out of context. Einstein wasn't referring to your typical modern incarnation of religion. Rather, he was describing the aspirations of what constitute what we would consider a religious person. As he said: "a person who is religiously enlightened appears to me to be one who has, to the best of his ability, liberated himself from the fetters of his selfish desires and is preoccupied with thoughts, feelings, and aspirations to which he clings because of their superpersonalvalue...In this sense religion is the age-old endeavor of mankind to become clearly and completely conscious of these values and goals and constantly to strengthen and extend their effect." Basically he was just ascribing values such as emotion, and purpose with "religion" although he himself admitted this definition of religion doesn't require a deity. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 7:10:51 AM That's not the main reason why I respect Buddhism; it's because they don't go out and wage war, commit murder, rape, plunder and murder in the name of a God. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 6:35:46 AM Buddhism is not a theistic religion, it is a philosophy. That is why Buddhism gets left alone. Only right wing nut job christians try to classify it as a religion, but that's only so they can condemn it as a sin against their god. |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 5:22:28 AM "Should more religions adopt this approach?" Hell no! Religion needs to disappear. Grown ups with invisible friends, c'mon! These ancient superstitions could precipitate the Fall of Modern Man! They need to go away and take their hatred and prejudice and intolerance with them when they go . . . |

Thursday, August 16, 2012 1:57:16 AM Buddhism isn't really a religion per se correct? that said, why would atheists have a "problem" with it? |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 5:09:44 PM @TheGuySmiley "most people understand that science and religion will end up working hand in hand together by the time we have true peace and harmony on earth" Yes, and the trees will begin to grow upside down, the fish will fly up to the clouds, and the catholic priest will no longer be looking at young boys. Utopia, here we come! |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 3:44:25 PM About this post, most people understand that science and religion will end up working hand in hand together by the time we have true peace and harmony on earth. There are people who say that only science or religion will stand in the end, but sadly most of them resort to negative acts based on hatred or bigotry. But neither are correct, because science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 3:27:05 PM Zeegrr60: reliance on prejudice is such a foolish thing. A true Christian is Christ-Like, meaning they love one another as He loves us. |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 2:04:59 PM Also, there are several sects of Tibetan Buddhism, and they've violently fought amongst themselves for political power through the years. |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 1:55:00 PM Tibetan buddhism has a ton of gods, holdovers from the old pre-buddhist religions from that region. And if you look at how Tibet was ruled as a theocracy before China imposed Communism, the Lamas were just as oppresive and backwards as any medieval European country. |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 12:48:18 PM Christians try to rule with fear.Jews of the world live in fear of christians. Scientology and Mormons have secret societies. Buddhists do not preach fear or hate. Budda wins. |

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 10:30:24 AM 1 of 4 Here's an interesting explanation I found online of why buddhists do not worship a diety. On a side note, you've never seen a buddhists terrorist. The two concepts are incompatable. By Ven S. Dhammika There are several reasons why buddhists don't believe in a supreme being. The Buddha, like modern sociologists and psychologists, believed that religious ideas and especially the god idea have their origin in fear. The Buddha says: "Gripped by fear men go to the sacred mountains, sacred groves, sacred trees and shrines". Dp 188 |
