The co-driver handles navigation so the driver can focus on driving. Essentially, they tell the driver what's going to be coming up after the next bend or two - which way does the track turn then, how severe the turn is, whether there are rocks on the edge of a turn, etc.
Angie, the Pike's peak road is open to the public, and it hasn't changed in decades. If you don't already know it like the route from your bed to the bathroom, you shouldn't be racing up it.
The only thing I can think of that would be worse than driving that road in a race would be driving that road in a race with someone yammering at you the whole time. |

Given the complexity of the Pikes Peak hillclimb, it would make sense to have a co-driver along the same lines as rallying. The co-driver handles navigation so the driver can focus on driving. Essentially, they tell the driver what's going to be coming up after the next bend or two - which way does the track turn then, how severe the turn is, whether there are rocks on the edge of a turn, etc.

I've always thought this was without question the stupidest place in the world to hold a car race.
Which is a part of the reason why it's done there.
There have been surprisingly few deaths in the Pikes Peak hillclimbs, in all the ~100 years of it.
I'd count most of the rally tracks used for Group B as more stupidly dangerous than Pikes Peak. They were dangerous for cars with ~125hp, when the tracks were established. For cars with ~550hp, they were mental. |
