chalket, I get into some pretty good flaming here, but my general rule is never to carry a grudge from one thread to the next. I might rip you a new one in one thread, and award you 3 Interwebs for the funniest comment in the next. It's a lot more fun to start fresh.

What A-Holes that cheer as the car tumbles down the hillside. What if they had been severely injured or killed, you cheered that... really? This isn't a monster truck race you stupid inbred butt-hole

The co-driver handles navigation so the driver can focus on driving. Essentially, they tell the driver what's going to be coming up after the next bend or two - which way does the track turn then, how severe the turn is, whether there are rocks on the edge of a turn, etc.

Angie, the Pike's peak road is open to the public, and it hasn't changed in decades. If you don't already know it like the route from your bed to the bathroom, you shouldn't be racing up it.

The only thing I can think of that would be worse than driving that road in a race would be driving that road in a race with someone yammering at you the whole time.

Given the complexity of the Pikes Peak hillclimb, it would make sense to have a co-driver along the same lines as rallying. The co-driver handles navigation so the driver can focus on driving. Essentially, they tell the driver what's going to be coming up after the next bend or two - which way does the track turn then, how severe the turn is, whether there are rocks on the edge of a turn, etc.

Here's some in-car video showing what a rally co-driver does.

Rallying with a "passenger"

I've always thought this was without question the stupidest place in the world to hold a car race.

Which is a part of the reason why it's done there.

There have been surprisingly few deaths in the Pikes Peak hillclimbs, in all the ~100 years of it.

I'd count most of the rally tracks used for Group B as more stupidly dangerous than Pikes Peak. They were dangerous for cars with ~125hp, when the tracks were established. For cars with ~550hp, they were mental.

Who are the dumb fu ckin' rednecks yelling "YEEEAAH!" as the car flies off the ridge like the very possibility of witnessing a horrifying death is enough to get them to ejaculate?

passenger = navigator
Rally racers have navigators for the quick turns since they go so fast, clearly he didn't do his job so well this time around

I think the passenger would be a co-driver who's meant to tell the driver: "don't go too fast around this corner because you might fall off a cliff"

I've always thought this was without question the stupidest place in the world to hold a car race. He got off easy. I've driven that road, and there are places where you can fall for a f***ing WEEK!

Also, "driver AND passenger?" WTF do you need a passenger for? So you won't die alone?
