My point wasn't really to try and point out that London (or wherever) was safer than NYC etc. only that HumanAction was cherry picking statistics.

other facts, washington D.C. has strict gun control, also a very high murder rate at 69 per 100,000. the city of Indianapolis has little gun control and the rate is 9 per 100,000. police have no obligation for timely protection legally speaking, criminals generally don't wait for the cops to get there. crime is generally lower in places with less gun control true around the world. Crime rates have risen in the usa as gun control increases. finally no gun law has yet to reduce crime and homicide. find one that has, brady law hasn't source Journal of the American Medical Association |

Jinx jinx, don't be so hypocritical. let's use real statistics since you like those. first, guns are used for either protection or to thwart crime approximately 1.5-2million times a year. A vast majority of criminals and felons polled say essentially they would have been less likely to commit crime if they knew someone besides police had a gun. The cost of gun control in england caused crime to go up. England crime rate is extremely high right now. extortion would go up and still bad people do bad things and will find a gun anyway. the problem isn't guns, it's an option, but the problem is people, some are bad and some get emotional because of certain events. my question is why focus the cause of crime to one thing, has that ever really worked? for civilian's, resistance with a gun is statistically the safest thing to do for when the crime happens, source national bureau of justice statistics.

By the way, the constitution was constructed in a manor in which it was to be continuously updated to keep up with the changing times. Brilliant really. It only fails when people choose to ignore facts and only go with their emotions and antiquated beliefs. Look at the statistics then try to defend the need to have so many guns on the street. |

@boogarcym: In addition to my previous comment, I was under the impression that we were discussing restricting firearms in the entire US, not just NYC (which already has some of the most stringent restrictions). It does us no good to evaluate such a small subset when we are determining whether or not to introduce legislation against the whole. |

@thelonious: Haha - patchgrabber called me out (rightfully so) on some stats I put up awhile ago because they were not standardized for.
@boogarcym: Yes, I agree that NYC has more murders. My point is that there are pros and cons that need to be evaluated. We cannot simply look at outliers and treat them as the norm.
In addition, as for using different methods, you can calculate the ratios for all nations and most are consistently higher than the US. It is difficult to imagine that all of the countries use drastically different methods. |

@HumanAction - using your same source (Table 1.2) you are over 3 times more likely to be murdered in NY than in London and over 16 times more likely in Washington DC. Also table 1.3 states the following "Definitions of offences vary between countries both due to
legal differences and statistical recording methods;

Interestingly, when standardized - patchgrabber - for crimes (includes homicide, other violence against the person, robbery, sexual offences [excluding indecent exposure, brothel keeping and offences related to prostitution">), many countries around the world with strict firearms laws relative to the US have drastically higher rates of violent crime.
Consider England and Wales with a rate of 1,400/100,000; France with a rate of 600/100,000; and, Canada with a rate of 1,000/100,000. Compared to the US (500/100,000), the problem seems to be strict gun laws.
These rates are estimated from Table 1.3 (2000) and compared to census data for the same year. The US population used - 281,421,906; England and Wales – 52,140,200; France – 59,329,690; and Canada – 31,28 |

How about people are not able to have a single bullet until they take an in depth gun safety and maintenance class, which they retake in a smaller form every few years, a thorough background and psychological test, and proof of a safe place to keep it if you have children in the home. As an Army veteran who trained for 7 years in the use of firearms, I'd rather have trained, educated Americans walking the streets armed. Let's be smart instead of stubborn. |

freak'n "gangsta's" are piss pore shots.. hahah... what was that, 5 rounds and only one hit at a range of MAYBE 20 feet... bunch of amateurs.
I live in Ohio and have my CCP, and to get it a person only needs to hit a man sized target from 30feet 3/5 times (at least where i took mine) and that's pretty bad.

Liberals see these tragic events on the news and forget that over a hundred million guns didn't hurt anyone. Licensed drivers kill more people every year than guns 3 to 1. The existence and availability of guns is NOT the problem. Even Obama recognizes this fact. |
