It would make more sense to hide it from her if it happened a couple of days to a few weeks before the olympics, but 2 years?? I doubt she would have been that devastated for so long. I dunno, it's their cultural values I suppose. |

It's not that bad
If you k ow a person who has put blood, sweat, tears for years training for an event that is held every four year; you wouldn't want to give them a news that may affect their performance.
In this case old relatiives died, they tend to, & will remain dead wether she knows about it or not .

Seems like this is a cultural thing, Gabby Douglas left her family to go train with the best. Sometimes people make sacrifices to achieve great things. If my grandma was dying she probably would make my parents swear not to tell me until I won a gold medal. It's a level of stoicism only the Spartans would understand.

Who cares about internal family decisions somewhere in China? We don't know anything anyway. Interesting though, is the fact that they were able to carry on lying, for years without her noticing. She must have had a very loose relationship with grandparents she never spoke to, or maybe been a bit too isolated at diving school? |

I would understand if it were a couple of days before competition, but 'several years'?!? I took my MCAT's 3 weeks after the death of my mom, and I did just fine. Either her parents are concerned that she doesn't have any emotional stability, or else they're entirely unable to understand a human's ability to deal with tragedy. Likely, however, they were simply concerned with her getting a gold and not experiencing life. |

@paddy: I don't take anything away from the athletes themselves (as long as they aren't doping), because they've put in the time. But it's asinine to suggest that someone who trained in, America say, has no childhood. Clara Hughes didn't even start training for the Olympics until she was 16! She said she was a smoker before that, and now she's one of the few people to have won medals in both the summer AND winter games. China has a bad record of knowingly cheating, so any scrutiny they receive is well due. |

If they had held off the news for a day or two I would understand. Like Gerry said, the grandparents wouldn't want their deaths to shock her and ruin her chances of getting the gold. However, it looks like they kept the information from her for years. That doesn't make sense in my mind and seems a little heartless. |

Do you honestly think any of the nations competing in these sorts of competitions have childhoods?
People need to stop making excuses for the Chinese success and congratulate them just like they do for every other country. Its getting pathetic.
By the way the parents here were 100% correct to do this, if they were American or European this wouldn't even have been posted. |
