So I hear China and the US have nearly the same amount of medals, total. But obviously, China has more golds than the US.
You know why?
Because every time the US wins a gold, they hand it over to China to pay of the national debt! |

The best way to show this is by comparing the medal count for the Soviet Union before 1991 and the total medal count of the former Soviet countries after 1991. They begin to win more after the fall of the Soviet Union, even adjusted for increase in total medals awarded (which largely include events they don't participate in anyways). |

beternal, if you do the medals weighted for gdp, all of the top nations are poor nations. North Korea, Mongolia, Cuba are right up there at the top. We would have to win almost half of all the medals to get "our fair share".
And for population, it favors small countries. New Zealand, Slovenia, Cuba. Yeah, that sounds fair.
If you broke America into 50 countries and made it like Europe, those fifty countries combined would probably end up sending more total olympians to the olympics and, combined, would win more. Conversely, if Europe were one country, the territories would likely send less total olympians. There are numerous reasons for this. |

I like how America and China (no disrespect) shrink to nothing when the actual populations or GDPs are considered...

Huh, if you match it by population Canada is roughly the same size as the US. That makes me a little less unhappy at how poorly we do at the summer games. |
