Monday, August 06, 2012 2:10:53 PM Louis CK did *exactly* this (it was even priced for $5) for downloads and streaming of his stand-up. |

Friday, August 03, 2012 7:26:33 AM While I agree with the bottom pic, the thing it's missing is marketing (and you've no idea how much it pains me to say that.) |

Thursday, August 02, 2012 11:56:56 AM Thursday, August 2, 2012 9:02:44 AM Also, get a computer and the software with a high-end sound card. Get a cheap-o MIDI keyboard. Get a decent mic, pre-amp, then soundproof a closet. Now you can start producing "professional" pop music. you don't need all that...all you need is this http://www.audiotool.com/ and autotune. |

Thursday, August 02, 2012 8:35:33 AM Yeah, those poor record companies. They're so hard-done-by. Maybe they should have planned a better business model to account for online music formats. It's not my fault they suck at business now. |

Thursday, August 02, 2012 6:26:28 AM if TDK thinks youtube has every song ever made, he clearly only listens to "top 20" type songs... |

Thursday, August 02, 2012 2:42:25 AM @TKD There are no ads, except for the ads. Also, not a complete library of every song ever, not by a long shot. |

Thursday, August 02, 2012 12:31:12 AM This is already happening. www.bandcamp.com is a website where you can hear music from artists and buy the music directly from them. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 11:51:08 PM Studios are only necessary if you are trying to make something very complex or you aren't very good. If you make good music it comes through no matter how "poor" (I call it honest) the recording is. I have some very serious audio gear and all that matters is that is that the musician cares. The love and passion is more important than perfectly recorded tracks (whatever the hell that is). There is no hiding the truth. I've bought albums that were recorded in people's apartments btw. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:33:33 PM @Gerry: Louis CK already had a following, and its much different to produce stand up comedy than music/books. musicians don't have the studio or equipment to make a professional CD, plus many don't have the ears to synthesize, distort, or edit their own music. and 1% (being generous there) of independently published ebooks are worth the read. publishing companies don't just take what you wrote, word for word, and slap a cover on it. they give you pointers, critique your work, and set you on the path to a better book. imagine an ebook of JK Rowling's Harry Potter, it probably wouldn't be too far off from the final chapter of her final book (deathly hallows). |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:25:42 PM oatmeal is delusional. the reason there are record companies are because bands can't afford to pay for studio time on their own. the benefit of having a professionally record track is to get radio time and fans. the ultimate goal for a musician, other than to make lots of music that he thinks sounds great, is to get packed concerts and sell lots of merchandise there. just as you wouldn't watch a movie filmed on a home camera with the director, choreographer, and writer also doing special effects on his own computer, you wouldn't pay for a record by a band who mixed their own music in their garage. |
