Andrew, it pains me to see idiots like you stating that the military pay is fine. After thirty years, I'm sure your father was earning a decent wage.

The entry level pay for an E1 is less than $18k/year. The entry level pay for an O1 is about $33k/yr. The average college graduate yearly salary, as of 2009, was $45k. $21k for high school graduates.

These folks are not risking their lives and most of them are not 'on the go' 12 or more hours a day, oftentimes much more. Most of them arent asked to go overseas and leave their families and friends behind for months or years at a time. Speaking of being gone for lengths of time, you should look into divorce rates, child support, etc. Additional costs that these soldiers incur while serving our country.

For what they do, the pay is minimal. Please thank your father on my behalf for his years of service. Regrettably he raised an ignorant douchebag for a son.

But are none of our more right-leaning contributors feeling a little cognitive dissonance? Doesn't a business have the right to make a profit? Even a libtard business?

In better days, I could see your point. However, I believe that this country is in a fight for its very existence. The next election will determine whether we remain a capitalistic constitutional republic or become a European-style socialist democracy.

A substantial portion of the money that goes into Hollywood is being used to bring about the latter of these two possible outcomes. Therefore, I have no qualms about depriving them of as much of that money as possible by any means possible.

In other words, this is war; f*** 'em!

I don't give a tinker's damn for the movie industry losing a few bucks, if they did, and to be fair neither apparently do they in this case. And I am not going to begrudge a bunch of squaddies in Afghanistan a few luxuries. So, good for him.

But are none of our more right-leaning contributors feeling a little cognitive dissonance? Doesn't a business have the right to make a profit? Even a libtard business? No-one is stopping you buying DVD's and contributing them, round my way there are often 'comforts for the troops' points in supermarkets.

Or do only some people have the right to seek the best possible return on their investment and labour? What if the goverment had simply mandated that the industry contribute x amount of discs?

Good on him! If the Hollywood libtards weren't such a bunch of greedy f***ing @$$holes, they would have been sending the DVDs over there themselves.

Very true. The movie industry is drastically overpaid, talk about the 1%. Ironically, they're the same people against the 1%. If they took their own advice and just took a small pay cut, maybe average people could see movies for a reasonable price. It costs $14 dollars to see a movie where I live.

Did anyone else read some of the comments on the article? Media douchebag hacks is what they are and I call BS on their allegations that he's taking food off their tables. These soldiers are hardly consumers now are they? Do they step out to the Cineplex on a friday night??? Nope. Do they drop into the local video store??? Nope. Matter of fact, they aren't even the smallest part of the economy while they're serving overseas. We OWE them some free movies for what they're doing.
These cinema hacks with their petty BS excuses are the reason I have no guilt about copying movies. I'm just as happy taking food off of their tables as they are taking it off mine by profiteering over their inflated prices and heavy handed attempts at screwing with our laws.

I'm really glad he's found a way to occupy himself now he's taken all of those balloons off his house.

....These guys are fine in terms of pay. One of the reasons we spend so much more than, say, China is simply because our soldiers are ,without a doubt, the best paid soldiers in the world. That, plus the fact that we have a giant research budget which is beneficial to the civilian world. The military was the first to use the internet and cell phones, for example.

So basically, some waste can be eliminated. But soldiers are not underpaid in any way.

Jamie, your numbers are off. Our budget is not a mere 2 trillion, it's 3.6 trillion. Defense spending is 700 billion, with another 100 billion in discretionary. In total, we're talking about 20% of total spending is on defense. That's less than Social Security.

And by the way, China is increasing its military by 10-11% a year as of late. It will catch up and easily compete with us.

My dad was in the Air Force for thirty years, I am acutely aware of these issues. Firstly, a good portion of the budget is waste. The military is highly bureaucratic. Secondly, a GIANT portion of our military budget is just paying the soldiers and giving them benefits. I, as a dependent, qualified to receive $80,000 to go to Columbia University. And I did. Benefits are excessive, there are no other jobs where an 18 year old can make this much money PLUS benefits. Not even close to minimum wage.

And if you go career and retire, you get half your salary every year for life. These guy

I have no prob with what he is doing but here is my question...nothing to do with this guy.

we spend nearly 800 billion on defense a year...considering we have a annual budget of somewhere near 2 trillion, you can see we are spending nearly half the budget on making war and yet somehow we cannot afford to

1. pay the troops better than min. wage a the lowest levels and crap a the higher levels?

2. we cannot afford to provide them with real VA benefits and are constantly finding out that the gov, repub and dem are taking befits away from them.

truthfully, we need to cut the defense budget by about half...that would still put us at about 4 times what china spends every year.

there is no fixing the economy when half your budget goes to a sector that does not generate money at all and actually means we half to spend moremoney fixing the poo we wreck.
