Wednesday, August 01, 2012 3:32:20 PM They should outlaw the sale of cigarettes everywhere. If you want to smoke, it should be that you'll have to get some tobacco seeds and grow it in your back yard the old way. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 3:21:12 PM I don't know if this is true. I live in NZ and this is the first I've heard of this. It could be an idea that an MP threw into the ring but it probably is not something that will happen for a while. Considering we can't even get a ban in place for busy shopping streets the odds of this getting through are minimal. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 1:59:12 PM If they really wanted everyone to stop, they would not up the price by 10% each year, but just make it the target amount next year. This way they clearly want to make a big amount of money the next few years until no-one can afford to smoke, and even then it will take a lot of time untill there will be no more smoking induced problems. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 10:37:15 AM "the REAL problem is all the MONEY the gov't makes from taxes" California keeps upping the tax on cigs...it's at 250% right now. Each time they up it, purchases drop so tax income drops. Basically they don't lose money 'cause of the increase, but they don't gain 'cause of decreased sales. Not I did not say smoking decreases. Indian reservations, military bases, Arizona & Mexico are both very close and some people use the internet to order cigs. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 10:02:54 AM I hate to say it, but a smart person would buy as many cigs as possible, and sell them if they put this into effect. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:51:24 AM @schecter5 - How about some responsibility for your own decisions? I know you are a young one, and your generation feel entitled, but the world owes you nothing. If you want something, man up and do it yourself. Making the world change to suit you, is selfish and arrogant. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:50:12 AM How to cut smoking: Only sell smokes at the same places that sell hard liquor. Easily done! Raising the prices only leads to increased smuggling, Canada has seen THAT first hand! Of course the REAL problem is all the MONEY the gov't makes from taxes: if smoking and drinking decreased, they'd lose $$ and have to tax the poo out of something else! (can't cut useless programs to save taxpayers money, heavens no!) |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 9:43:48 AM Fu.ck,ing stupid. And here I was pissed off about washington states sin tax on cigaretts. Tax alone makes up half the cost of a pack. They have recently proposed a "sin" tax on candy and soda, but I am not sure if it has passed yet. |

I hate this mentality. Damn control freaks. "What you are doing is not illegal, but I don't personally like it so I am gonna force you to stop doing things I don't like." Azz Holes! |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:53:28 AM If it would actually work I would be all for it- but I suspect they would get a healthy blackmarket trade in counterfeit fags which would be much more harmful. In effect this would be prohibition- and we know that does not work. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:43:33 AM It's true cigarettes can cause health problems, but why stop there? How about $100 for a gallon of gas to reduce traffic fatalities, or for a burger to decrease high cholesterol problems. Maybe $100 for a loaf of bread because carbohydrate intake can make us fat. Or, of course, you can do stupid stuff like actually making enforceable laws (and enforcing them!)for things like supplying tobacco to minors, or dangerous driving. You know, dumb poo that lets adults make their own decisions...choose their on poison, as they say. I guess I'm just being stupid! |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:33:03 AM I'm not sure an increased price will do anything. Smuggling cigs in from Australia probably wouldn't be too difficult, and then you've just created an underground market and made the job of your police that much more difficult. |

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 8:26:53 AM Well it would work, I've been smoking since i was 14, and for the life of me I can't see how it's legal. It kills more than all other illegal drugs combined. Seriously, out law this poo already. I wouldn't mind a forced quit. |
