My twin 11 year old niece and nephew are Autistic. My oldest son is Aspergers (the old definition). I have tested on the Spectrum as well, though since it was discovered well after I reached adulthood, they really don't "count" it as Autism/ Aspergers now. I can say with certainty that this is not beyond the realm of possibility for an Autistic child to do. Statements like this, even if well-meant, only further the harmful and false stereotypes that Autistic people face every day. |

What a powerful and inspiring story! My wife and I are dealing with something similar in our son, Brian (not the one in my avatar). He is three right now and doesn't speak a word. But he grunts and uses his hands to communicate. He's had a hard time learning sign language, but we're not stopping! Thank you, Carly! Thank you for inspiring parents like myself! |
