Free speech goes both ways. I don't agree with the Chick-fil-a CEO's opinion but they aren't hiring and firing people based on their sex/race i don't see a problem.

I think that everyone that does not toe the "PC" line should be silenced. It's the American way!

That's really funny - because this CEO's beliefs are just that, beliefs - which fall under the protected categories cited by the Mayor's anti-discrimination policy. Woo-hoo. What about the monetary system and financial crisis in this country? Oh, you're going out to protest a chicken restaurant? Classy.

I'd do better than shake a fist. I'd raise a middle finger. Except there's no orientation to point it at, as he doesn't exist.

"Just like because you're Christian, you slaughter Muslims."

It doesn't say that in MY Bible sir.

" The MAYOR is not a "community leader" he's a POLITICAL Leader! DUH! When he vows to use government powers to opress free speech it's ILLEGAL! "

Do you even know the story? Must I educate you about the facts before we debate?

In Chicago it is not the mayor that is blocking Chick-Fil-A it is an alderman.

"Alderman Joe Moreno, who represents Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, plans to use his aldermanic privilege, a Chicago tradition in which City Council members defer to aldermen on local matters, to block the restaurant's permit."

In boston the mayor (as far as I've read) isn't blocking Chick-Fil-A, he simply said he didn't want them there and hoped they'd reconsider coming.

Ground Zero Mosque: I said repeatedly it was their RIGHT to build the Mosque there. However, I didn't believe their REASONS for it, thought it was in poor taste and fully supported people's opposition to it.
100% Consistant.

@gothmo: What he actually said, and what his attackers SAY he said are two different things...

@aj: lolz! Perfect!

You said a community leader blocking a company from coming because of legal free speech issues is illegal. I'm making the case that it isn't. I gave you a hyperbolic version n of the same situation. It is incredibly offensive, which was the point, but completely legal in regards to free speech. It wasn't trolling in any way.

But if it is easier for you to ignore it, OK. I see you passed over my other statement as well.

"So should all businesses in Chicago be required to sign a statement saying they support gay marriage? No businesses allowed that we disagree with? Sounds like fascism to me."

Cute... In case everyone forgot, businesses aren't humans capable of emotions and opinions. Ther opinions aren't something we need to know. Just shut up and sell products. I also find it weird that Starbucks has to claim they support gay marriage. Why do the owners get to speak for the opinions of everyone that composes their companies? It seems like an effort to blur the line between human and corporation so corporations will some day get to vote on such social issues, as if their lobbyists don't have enough power already.

@AJ, They're Muslim, so obviously they kill gays.
Good logic.

However, I do agree that a mayor or public official, while allowed to hold views and beliefs against this man's/company's views and beliefs, shouldn't be able to limit their business's expansion due to that belief or action (so long as the man/company acts lawfully, which they clearly are).

I drating love how conservatives are trying to recolor this discussion. It's NOT that he THINKS or BELIEVES homosexuality is wrong. He can do that all he wants. It's that he is taking ACTION to ACTIVELY discriminate against a portion of our population by paying millions of dollars to support bigoted and discriminatory legislation. ACTIONS are no longer just thoughts or ideas or tenants. You take action, you try to actively affect MY life (he's affecting the lives of innocent people with his ACTIONS) and that's a whole different thing that "holding views". Nice try at misdirection, though.

"while others don't (e.g. Venezuela, which is a member of OPEC)."

Tangent. Venezuela has HORRIBLE human rights. Killing political opponents. Citizens can't afford food because of falsely inflated prices. Etc.

Hugo Chavez is a major douchebag.

Chick-fil-A is easy to understand and easy to boycott.

Gasoline is far more complicated and intrinsic to too many things. First of all, around 90% of the gasoline used in the US was refined in the US. And around half of the crude oil the US uses comes from the US and Canada. Yes, around 40% comes from OPEC, but there's no way to separate the imported and domestic gasoline.

Furthermore, OPEC doesn't put anyone to death. OPEC is an organization that spans 12 countries, some of which have some rather disgusting human rights policies, while others don't (e.g. Venezuela, which is a member of OPEC).

So, there really is little comparison between the one straightforward example and the other much more complicated issue.

Chick-fil-A gets 10,000 to 25,000 applications for roughly 60 to 70 new stores that open each year. It is a privately held company with no debt. Averages &2.7 million over McDonald's $2.4 million per store annual capital. In 2012 they will award $1.65 million in collage scholarships to employees. There employees are paid 20-35% higher average wadges then any area fast food chain. I contend Chick-fil-A may be along a lot longer than the City of Chicago which continues to loose major business second only to Detroit. If you agree or disagree with Cathy's statement realize that he was trolled by a reporter and used as a distraction by Mayor Rahm Emanuel who's city is crumbling under his feet as he extorts the life out of it.

So should all businesses in Chicago be required to sign a statement saying they support gay marriage? No businesses allowed that we disagree with? Sounds like fascism to me. I don't agree with what Truett Cathy(founder of Chick-Fil-A) believes, but I support his right to believe it.

I don't understand peoples love for Chick-fil-A. I've been there once and it tasted just like something I woudl have gotten at KFC for $4 less.
The only good thing there is their weird ketchup holders, that either let you dip or pour.
Kinda sad when the only good thing about your restaurant is the free ketchup...

Good for them. It's fine not to believe in it but to be disrespectful about it is a whole different beast. As the CEO of a company he should know better anyway... These things always come back to bite them in the butt. There's not even one in this state, which is fine with me.

I guess you have some reference for this. And I'm quite sure that his religion has tenets about homosexuality. Right or wrong he has a right to those beliefs. He also has a right (under the first amendment) to proclaim them. You have a right to boycott him, but the state doesn't have a right to
a) try to silence him
b)try to intimidate others who might like to speak out
c)deny him a livelihood
As I said earlier:
What would you be saying if the Mayor of Atlanta denied a gay club the right to establish itself in Atlanta because its values were "not respectful of our neighbors , our residents, and our families". I'd be outraged!
