@nnoamfer. There is truth to all you say, 'In his younger days inSouth Africa'. he was a typical for his class, race & time.
He though went through this amazing transformation into a selfless, quite courage that was inspiring to the entire nation of people and later leaders of other oppressed places.
Both sides of my family were freedom fighters. My relatives were exactly like him. Well educated, high class & wealthy land owners who gave up their cushy little lives for the cause. Gandhi was a game changer. My great uncle was present during a meetings when Indian leaders discussed the post independence division of power structure of India. Gandhi was adamant about the rights of minority especially Muslims and the lower classes of the Indian society. He was assassinated by a Hindu(very Sadlly also from my cast & state) who held him responsible for siding with Muslim leaders in the debate.

malcolm x? what? why the hell do ppl keep lumping him in with those who practiced civil disobedience? Not denying he did have some positive impact but seriously he was not preaching "peace". |

@sutra46, Read the book "Behind the mask of divinity". Gandhi wasn't responsible for the liberation of India, it was the people who fought for it.
He also supported the "divide and rule" policy, and was an outspoken racist against African people. He called them kaffirs and believed a jail room shouldn't be shared with him. He was also a horrible family man.
But if we talk about leading a nation, again, he wasn't good ay all, he wasn't responsible for the liberation of India, it was people like Bhagat Singh. |

Man stopped eating for 21 days for the cause he beloved in. Do you have anywhere near that passion & conviction for anything that affects you personally? He didn't have to do any of the things he did but he changed the destiny of a sub- continent. South Africa & States changed thanks to the influence ofnon-violence movements, he was compassion incarnate. A human being who evolved in a lifetime.

Its not that only certain people are assassinated. Its that we only call it assassination when its certain people who are murdered.
@cobrakiller is correct! If you're FAMOUS then it's "assassination". If you're a nobody? It's a statistic.
Malcom X said we should live together in peace? I must have missed THAT speech...
