Monday, July 23, 2012 9:07:34 AM "Before anyone says it, most Buddhists do worship gods, especially if one includes bodhisattvas. The Budddha taught that worship of the gods was fine so long as one didn't let it get in the way of pursuing enlightenment. Atheistic Buddhism is mostly a western phenomenon. " ------------ i think to westerners, a lot of buddhist worship appears similar to worship in the abrahamic religions (and thus as if many gods were worshipped), but in reality, there are no "gods" as we usually understand them. buddhas and boddhisattvas are enlightened beings and venerated for their guidance, but you don't need to follow any commandments to appease them or such. technically, they are devas, a term which is usually and unfortunately translated as god but which evokes the wrong connotations (they are neither immortal / eternal nor omnipotent). |

Monday, July 23, 2012 8:58:44 AM The "magical underwear" part is only used by non-mormon (or non-LDS). I know no one who calls them this way. But if anyone does, they obviously don't get it. |
