Thursday, July 19, 2012 12:53:11 PM You know 12 goes into 24 twice (12x2=24), right? And 24x10=240, right? So 12x2x10=12x20=240, therefore 12 goes into 240 twenty (2x10) times. Thank you for that crucial update, Captain Obvious. Perhaps I should have added "I wish I could divide 240 by 12. Oh wait, I can!" especially for people that are oblivious to sarcasm like you. But then it's so much fun watching you take everything literally. But it still takes 4 hours *between* inspections, regardless of how long those inspections take. Point, set, and match go to Neil deGrasse Tyson. Actually, I believe the precise problem definition was "The Park Ranger inspects the bathroom every four hours". Not that four hours elapse *between* inspections. Still, NDT has acquired one more gullible fanboi. Which is nice for him. You should follow him on Twitter: he'll love you for it.

Thursday, July 19, 2012 4:18:37 AM @miasmaat - "could" implies a theoretical limit ~ practically he's not going to get anywhere near that. And I was wrong ~ i forgot DA. The correct answer (following on from Evan below) is one.. very happy ranger :) |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 11:56:47 PM @OldOllie: the answer is 20 (with no time to spare) 4hours*60minutes=240minutes in each cycle. 240minutes/12'sessions'=20 'sessions' You're right that it probably takes at least a few seconds to get the ranger's pants back on and go to the next stall, so in theory you're right. :) |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 10:32:13 PM Since it takes a finite amount of time to complete an inspection, wouldn't the correct answer be 19? |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 4:01:36 PM @MattPrince - only if Glenn is a champion at multitasking.. Also - it has to be assumed that 12 mins is the maximum time it takes for glenn to get a guy off, since things of that nature cannot be uniform unless Glenn has perfected some magical procedure to bring all males to climax at exactly the twelve minute mark, therefore assuming maximal multi-tasking the number would have a bottom range of 80, surely. Pun unintended. |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 12:30:57 PM It's only asking what happens in between the time the inspection takes place. You don't count the time the inspection is taking place since the clock stop when they are there. It's kinda like how you don't go to work and say you only worked 7 hours of your 8 hour shift because an hour of it was spent walking around/wasting time/in the bathroom. As soon as you punch in/out is when the clock stops and starts. So as soon as the inspector is in the restroom, the counter stops and as soon as they leave, it starts again. |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 11:47:06 AM realistically, it would be 17 for time to change between people, and to not get caught by the ranger, given a minute for the stranger get ready, and leave for the next one to come in and get ready and to leave the restroom before the ranger gets there |

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 11:33:59 AM I have been known to respond to rhetorical questions on this very website, and I couldn't help but think the way NdGT does. From a lifetime of watching movies on videotape I know immediately that 120 minutes is two hours, so he can do 12 minutes x 10 = 2 hours, double it to get 20 in 4 hours. And that was before I scrolled down to the bottom of the picture to see that NdGT said exactly the same thing. |
