So that's not Archimedes' original, but a copy. They need a higher resolution X-ray. In a dark corner they'll find the words MADE IN CHINA. |

THINK of how it was made: not by "trial and error" since the parts are outrageously expensive & hard to make: they had a plan!
And if ONE cog is off by ONE tooth? The whole device fails!
It's likely they built a "simple" one, then kept adding features as each model progressed, arriving at the Antikythera over time.
It's still freaking amazing! Hooray for the Human Race! |

I watched it all, and i have issues with them saying that it was a storm that caused the ship to sink. It could have also been sabotage that brought the ship down. or the items could have been thrown overboard for a reason.. we just don't know. |

Good watch.. was a little skeptical when they started referring to it as a "machine that can tell the future" ..and 'computer' might be a strong word... I think calculator would be a little more apt. |

For those trying to decide whether this is worth an hour: It's about a mechanical computer built in ancient Greece. New techniques for revealing interior and surface details have recently been applied, with the result that we now know the machine to have been more impressive than we thought even just ten years ago. This 2012 documentary does a great job of explaining the genius of the Antikythera mechanism's design--and the brilliance of the many minds who have labored to figure out what it is and how it works.
If you are interested in astronomy, the ancient Greeks, the history of technology, or archaeology, you'll probably enjoy this.

although i think that guy made the gears out of wood. But it wouldnt be that great of a leap for that society to convert the gears to bronze, just look at the statues |

maybe, there was some stories about a greek that built mechanical calculating machines and "robotic puppets based on a series of ropes, gears and pullies. Kindof like the first computer punchcards. Anyone remember who that was? |
