Friday, July 06, 2012 10:37:28 AM If you think about it there is some logic to this, if only to say that they were treated like animals and the strongest were breed. Doesn't make it right...just saying. |

Friday, July 06, 2012 4:29:21 AM I'm glad they're openly talking about this. I've never understood why race is such a big deal here in the US. I'm tall, you're short, that makes us different. But I'm white, you're black, is wrong to say and racist because we're all the same...?! There's a miss step in logic there. It makes me different than you, not better, and I choose to openly welcome our differences. |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 10:32:33 PM To understand what he's talking about, don't compare black Americans to white Americans; compare black Americans to black Africans. Blacks' superior athletic performance isn't due to race nearly as much as it is to population selection. White and Arab slave traders went into the already existing slave markets in west Africa bought the biggest, strongest, and healthiest specimens, because they would bring the best prices and the highest profits in the slave markets. Then they stacked them like cord wood in ships for a month-long ocean voyage on which 10-20% were expected to die. Then they were subjected to back-breaking forced labor, and the best performers were bred like farm animals to produce the strongest children. Of course slavery was shameful and despicable, and white slavers greatly increased the numbers of Africans who were captured and sold into slavery by other Africans, but it did result a physically superior sub-population in America. |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 10:20:40 PM I've made that argument before. Compare it to say, dog breeding. Which is how slaves were viewed back then. You breed only the strongest slaves so they can do more work. Meanwhile white folks have sex with each others flabby lazy spouses. After hundreds of years you get chihuahuas... I mean modern day black people. |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 7:19:35 PM Steelgrid I'm not sure what your position is here. Are you saying black people aren't superior to other races athletically? |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 4:34:03 PM "They certainly are superior. If my ancestors were chasing antelope with spears all day long, I would be superior too." You ancestors were chasing animals with spears. What you think w/e race you are just magically appeared in a McDonalds? |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 12:53:04 PM Arcval, based off what i know, I'd probably agree, I just didn't think the bell curve was the best source to write after. Honestly if there is a gene causing it I'm just miffed i got my sports gene from the other half of my family i guess :D |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 12:48:19 PM Modern humans evolved in Africa which is a VERY tough place to live, even today. Consequently the african population pushes our genetic profile to the extremes e.g.tallest and shortest people in the world both found in Africa. Slaves were often selected for physique so it should not be a surprise that a modern African-American descendent with the benefits of western diet and the training opportunities offered to promising athletes in that country could be - literally - top of his game. Just imagine the extent of untapped potential being wasted in Africa today! |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 12:48:11 PM @fianzo: Fair enough, it's not a perfect book. Taking it out of the picture again, what do we know: -The USA ran a series of polices that formed a selective breeding program amongst black slaves in the southern states. -The effects of selective breeding on animals and plants. -There are some small statistical variations in data on people with a large portion of there genes from ancestors who were the products of said breeding program that are in line with the aims of the program. Hence there is, in this case, I believe reasonable evidence for causation. |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 12:41:57 PM Also discussing the subject at hand, you can't go back 1000s of years the the pyramids as A) Egyptians to this day claim there wasn't slave labour used on them, B) I haven't read anything that suggests they were trying to produce stronger slaves through selective breeding C) Any that did occur would have mixed into the general population by now. A firing 20 years ago was probably unjust imo but 20 years ago is a long time to clutch to straws fwiw i'd wager that the majority of the board or whoever made the call weren't african american, 60 years ago thre were still open lynchings, today there is a black president, times have evidently moved through the gears a lot. I'm not sure if you guys are being purposely challenging, but the idea of racism is that you cannot paint all people of one creed as anything by default like implying that all black people are lazy. On the contrary to this, I would agree that the racism card is played too much but i'd argue both ways now more than ever.. |

Thursday, July 05, 2012 12:26:38 PM Saying you're not racist then citing the bell curve as an example isn't the best idea fwiw, it has some very misleading statistics about the IQ of different ethnic groups and is a very good example of how correlation and causation aren't the same if you go deeper. Any ethnic group of children in the adoption system has the same average IQ when judging results from families of similar backrounds. I'll cite a source when I can be bothered to find one, or probably not I normally wander off after my 2 cents as I don't enjoy arguments too close to home as it were, 2 hours or so in lectures using the bell curve as an example of how not to interpret results and breaking down most of its points a few years back has made me sceptical of anyone who cites in an argument.
