Killer donut. My rant is how you are viewed by the rest of the nation, through media, movies and t.v. reality shows that glimpse at your society. All we see of your society in the media is buffoonery.You never bitch about bad portrayals of your lives, we only hear from your village idiots about gays and unions being evil My rant was satirical, but here is a dissertation that was written by a doctor of social media at the University of Georgia. I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, but frankly, I've never encountered any "Southern Prejudice" before from people anywhere else in the US. Uneducated, lazy rednecks are certainly not only located in the rural South, you can find uneducated trash in any part of the country in both urban and rural settings, so to make a blanket statement like that about the south is pretty ignorant. In actuality a lot of rural "country folk," especially farmers, are extremely well educated. That's one reason why we have agricultural colleges like Clemson and Texas A&M. |

Oh, that's funny, Painter. I've lived in the deep south for most of my life, and the majority of my friends are intelligent, educated, and quite witty. You know, we do have cities down here. As a matter of fact, I hear more northern people butchering the English language than Southern. Northern folk I've encountered tend to use a lot of double negatives in their speech. |

If you are a white male from the rural south there is a prejudice, I have seen how the rest of America views them, most of the nation views white males from the deep south to be uneducated, misogynistic and racist, just because they slaughter the English language, drive 2.5 ton pick ups to go to work at McDonald's, and fly the confederate flag (a symbol of the losing side..it's like saying "Yay, my ancestors were too stupid to beat a bunch of corn farmers) Yes, there is a preconceived notion that everyone from the south looks and thinks like the Hill people from the movie Deliverance...and I as a northerner would never hire someone from the south due to the widely held view that southern males are lazy, shiftless, violent and have a lower intelligence. It's just bad for business, you can't have someone who sounds like Jethro BoDean representing a company that makes precision laser surgical devices.Southerners can find fairness by expanding the Americans with disabilities act. |

Maybe people are born gay or straight, but I honestly don't believe you'll have any idea what a kid will be. I grew up with kids who I was sure would be gay but are happily married and straight. I just don't think it's as obvious as people seem to think it is. |

I don't mind you sympathy but I bet there's tons of women in the middle east and tons of starving children in Africa wishing they were a white male. I get what 5cats is saying. It's true to a point. The worse thing to be these days is a white, straight male. Every other group now gets special treatment and attention, and if we try anything similar it's received in a negative way.
Could we hold a straight pride parade, no way, it would get blasted in the media as being anti-gay, when really, it's just a personal choice. Could we hold a male rally, nope, feminists would all over that like a fat kid on a cupcake. What about a white rally, well we all know where that one would go, even if it had nothing to do with other races, just happy to be me kind of deal. Women can hold a Slut march, and it's empowering, men try that, it's sexist.
If you don't get where I'm going with this, you have my sympathy, I can't make my point any clearer than that. |

@FancyLad: It takes some mental gymnastics, but yes this could be a message suggesting that parents "check on" their kids to make sure they're "growing up straight"... but that idea plays into the hands of the "born gay" side.
If only there were Some Sort Of Website we could go and find out...
