Extra pieces left over just means you've improved the efficiency of the engine.

My mate just spent TWO YEARS rebuilding a 1961 Triumph Thunderbird, classic British bikes and motors are EXPENSIVE.

Me and a buddy pulled 3 chevy 350s and put 2 back in and got one running in a single afternoon. I needed my car for work . . . one engine was shot and we swapped the two good ones. Those were the days. You gotta pull the engine to change a waterpump these days.

I'm sure it took him that long cause he kept stopping every few moments to take a picture. Plus he might just have a job and life, so he can't spend every waking moment working on it.

If you've ever done this, it's not so entertaining.

I'm not mechanically inclined and have no idea why I watched that. I REALLY don't understand why I enjoyed it, but hey, whatever. Cool!

As an experienced engine builder i can assure you the skill isn't in stripping the engine down, it's in identifying which components are likely to fail and need replacing.
These aren't necessarily the same components as the ones that have exceeded their wear limit and also need replacing.

And as for rebuilding the engine, it's a case of making all parts clinically clean and taking your time to make sure you don't miss anything or torque the bolts down incorrectly thus potentially warping or cracking the block/head.

I've seen more cracked cases and warped heads then i care to recall due to customers letting their pey monkey do the work.

"who takes 11 months to just rebuild an engine?"

My dad's been rebuilding his 59 Austin Healey for years. He put it on blocks when my brother and I got close to driving age.

Very cool video! But really, 11 months for the rebuild?? I can understand the little extra time just for the sake of the video, but damn. I just rebuild my top end a couple weeks ago and it took me two days. I can't remember how long my last full rebuild took but I know it wasn't close to 11 months.

When you're left with extra parts, it means you're a good mechanic.

Ive never rebuilt an engine, but I know that feeling when you've done everything, you've followed the instructions, it works, its all good...But theres a few important looking things left over...

Love the parts left over at the end.

I have rebuilt the top half of an engine before, and it happened to me too.....

Car ran great for another 100k miles. Can't explain the pieces.
