I like how the only truth in those statements was the bad stuff. Since when we were "informed" in the 1950s? Since when were the 1960s so incredibly great? This is all nostalgic bullpoo. Women and blacks were less equal back in the times he's talking about than they are now. And guess what? They're still struggling for equality! And really, war for moral reasons?! You've gotta drating kidding me. We had to be DRAGGED into World War 2. Very FEW laws were based on "morality," the public and the government were just as open to monetary influence then as they are now. We had a good economy in the 1950s, although it's been on a steady decline since. As a result it's painted a fake picture of an oh-so-perfect 'mericuh.
TL;DR: Get off the high horse and the emotional-backing-soundtrack. Nostalgia does not make a country great. |

If you all dont know about the NDAA look it up. It means YOU american citizen can be abducted in the night by your gov't without any reason whatsoever, just like old school soviet russia the place my parents escaped from. |

I think America is pretty great. But, it's foolish to think that we're "the greatest country in the world" considering...well, all of those things that Jeff Daniels said. Kinda difficult to claim "the greatest ever" consider stats like he names. On the other hand, we're certainly not slouchy. We do have a lot of good going on. But, as Jeff said, so do a lot of other countries. The question is, I guess, does that matter? Does it matter that we're not the greatest? And, if it does, what can be done about it? (hypothetical questions, by the way, as I know what *my* answers are) |

So, by the same logic, Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden must have been great guys? For why else would everyone have gone on about what uber-jerks they were? It's not like they spend that much time going on about the weird guy at work that doesn't shower and creeps all the women out, right?
