Never mind "big bride", I think her big dress (long skirt) was the reason she was the only one whose head went completely under, I think it stole her leg freedom. I think that's also why she had to be dragged to the shore, too.

I say failed assassination attempt. The groom knew that she was out of shape and being in a dress would keep her from being able to swim effectively, so he sabotaged the pier. The bridesmaid ruined his master plan though and at the end he realized she wasn't drowning and tried to make himself seem like he wasn't trying to kill her. |
