@macguffin, um...no one was whistling...it was just a billboard. It's cute. And I'm pretty sure those are up so no one can see them building while it's under construction, so all the people working on it, are behind it, not outside whistling at people walking by seeing as how they can't even see anyone. It is CLEARLY and EXTREMELY OBVIOUSLY a joke, especially considering the bottom that says "so will we soon, please pardon our dust, dirt, and other assorted inconveniences". So yeah, it's just a joke relax. People are wayyy too sensitive these days. Damn.

>>Which is not nearly the same thing as being leered and verbalised at by a crowd of ignorant men.

Actually, it is. And the men are not ignorant. They know they are leering. But what are they leering at you might ask? A girl with a nice dress that shows off her legs on complete purpose perhaps?

Tell you what if some women have a problem with it, they can choose not to wear things that men consider hot. Of course, most will not do this will they? Women find the benefits of being attractive outweigh the negative.

Go ahead, convince young attractive women not to wear nice outfits that accentuate the positive and see how long that lasts. Good luck to you.

freddyferret: "a bunch of douchetards who have their panties up their twats."

This. This is why i posted this link. i knew there'd be a crowd who'd get their own panties in a wad over the whole "political corectness" thing" that it would generate responsive thread. Maybe if we spent less time bitching about that and more time trying to be polite and NOT offend each other, we'd live in a better world. it's either that, or, we can make jokes about how stupid conservatives are. Your choice.

freddyferret: "Not to mention the old stereotype about construction workers is a lot of crap. These women must still think we live in the '50s."

I feel a whistle coming on. Do you have a little girl I can try it on?

Robyn Marano, vice president of marketing for MarketFair, did not respond to requests for comment.

She couldn't come out and publicly say that they were forced to pander to a bunch of douchetards who have their panties up their twats.

If you're worried about what your daughter is doing or what might happen to her at the mall, don't just drop her off at the door. Teach kids what's right and wrong and let them learn to stand on their own. Not to mention the old stereotype about construction workers is a lot of crap. These women must still think we live in the '50s.

I laughed. But I see how it can be offensive. Probably wiser to remove it. But seeing as how she didn't complain about the actual construction workers means that it seems to be a play on a stereotype/behavior that's largely disappeared. But symbols still matter.

Also reading this thread was amusing. I can always count on you IAB.

Checking back, I think I see what I've missed.

When you wrote in entirely sex-neutral language about how whistling at someone is always and inherently intimidating them, i.e. a deliberate act of intimidation, you were thinking only in terms of the sexist stereotypes you favour. So of course it was sex-specific *in your mind* even though your words were sex-neutral and you were talking in general terms and not specifically about this advert.

The mistake is mine. Your sexism is as easily predictable as your amusingly puerile attempts to insult me and I should have taken it into account.

PS: No, I didn't change the subject. Quote me, if you believe I did.

As I said in the previous post, I did quote you. That's what I replied to. In my reply, I quoted the text I was replying to. That's what quoting is for.

Now reply by demanding I quote you again, or by saying I was replying to someone else when I quoted you, or just make something up. If you repeat it often enough, I'll become bored enough to ignore you and what was actually written will be on a different page and therefore nobody will see it.

If anything this is offensive to the construction workers who are being forced into a stereotype. I have been whistled at before, but never by construction workers. I'm sure their workers are professional and wouldn't whistle at mall-goers walking by the renovation, so the company was just trying to be witty. If anything it is the construction workers who should be offended by the company making jokes at their expense. :\ Don't see what some women on here have their panties in a bunch over...

@MeGrendel: You make a valid point. Can I use that the next time I call some right-wing knuckle-dragging douchebag a child-molesting tea-bagging racist idiot who porks their fathers?

Haha, I figured as much. That seems to be the way idiots work these days. Those who don't have a real reply just proofread the other person's post while using pedantic speech in order to mask the fact that they don't know what their talking about. That's what all of your posts are MacGuffin..

You should have known that the subject had changed because you were the person who changed it. Do you not read even your own posts?

PS: No, I didn't change the subject. Quote me, if you believe I did. All of my posts have been about the specific subject of men leering at and verbally abusing women, which is what this thread is about. It doesn't surprise me that you'd make yet another unfounded assertion, however: it's abundantly clear that you don't read before posting.

But please, do carry on making demonstrably-unsupportable statements in support of your uninformed views; it's quite entertaining to see someone so willing to lay their ignorance bare.

>>>The subject in question had nothing to do with men whistling at women.<<<

I think you'll find the thread intro contained the exact phrase, and I quote, "Women concerned about teenage daughters being whistled at". And, even making allowances for the likelihood that you may not have seen a real one up close before, if you cross-reference the supplied photograph carefully with Wikipedia, you should just be able to discern that it is specifically the female of the species that is being depicted as the subject of construction worker whistling, and not homo sapiens as a more general target :

If you don't want your daughter getting whistled at don't let her dress like a whore.

That's a dumb thing to say, on more than one level. Firstly, people can easily get whistled at in almost any clothing. It makes little difference unless it's enough to qualify as a disguise. When I was younger and being whistled at, I was always dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt or t-shirt. Secondly, prostitutes often dress more conservatively than an average woman out on the town.

Also, this is still offensive because it's a bit sexist. Might as well say "the construction is taking a while because WOMEN are doing the work!"

True, although it would be a closer comparison if you added some clearer sexist stereotyping, something like "The construction is taking a while because women are doing the work and they stop often to polish their nails and gossip spitefully behind each other's backs".

*Sigh*.... People take the world too seriously.. It's just a sign. It doesn't mean the construction workers are actually going to whistle at you or hit on you. In fact, I bet a lot of construction companies have policies against that. It is the 21st century after all.. They're just using a common stereotype to reinforce their lame joke about going under a remodel. That's all it is.. It seems to me that people who have no life and feel like they need to stand up for something (as unnecessary as it may be) are the one's who bombard people with petitions in order to take harmless crap like this down. People need to get over themselves and stop letting themselves get offended by dumb s.hit like this. Life's too short to give that many s.hits over nothing.

In a thread about men whistling at women, I'll let you work out for yourself why gender is an issue of relevance. It shouldn't be beyond even someone with your level of incomprehension and inability to follow facts accurately to work it out if you try *really* hard.

I'm sorry. I should have realised that I needed to use several posts each time in order to carefully explain everything to you.

No, wait, it wouldn't matter. You don't lack the ability to read and understand. You lack the will to do so.

The subject in question had nothing to do with men whistling at women. It was about people being intimidated. Posts in a thread are not necessarily always about the title of the thread.

You should have known that the subject had changed because you were the person who changed it. Do you not read even your own posts?

Oh, really, were you? Because from here it looked like your conclusion about me ("It's nice that you've never had anyone intimidate you") was based on something that madduck actually said ("I have never felt threatened by whistling") rather than anything I wrote. Now, what was that you were saying about having an ability to read and to understand again?

Are you parodying yourself or are you serious? I can't tell.

I *quoted your text* when replying to it and you claim you thought I was replying to something else written by someone else.

Yes, that's a good example of what I was saying about being willing and able to read and understand. Thank you for making it bloody obvious how right I am about you.

Also, as a lesser example of my point, you ignored one of the two key words. Ability is not the same as willingness and ability.

It's hard to believe that there are women this dumb in the world. If a woman gets raped and she's wearing a skirt, is that her fault too, by the rules in effect on your planet?
