MeGrendel: "What no one's pointed out is that the construction workers in question CAN NOT EVEN SEE the patrons of the mall..."

Actually, JUGGALETTEx0 pointed that out. But it is still a good point to reitterate.

@megrendel, yes, that was already pointed out that the construction workers cannot even seen the shoppers.

PizzaPits-"I'd like to think that the world isn't THAT stupid."

They're not. Even the people complaining about it aren't 'that' stupid. They just enjoy going around finding things to be 'offended' by. It gives their pitiful lives something resembling 'meaning', and delusions of mediocrity.

PizzaPits-"it's quite possible that most of the people who take this billboard literally are the ones who are offended by it."

Even THEY don't take it literally. They just see a good (in their mind) excuse to squawk and make some noise.

What no one's pointed out is that the construction workers in question CAN NOT EVEN SEE the patrons of the mall. The mall takes care that no patron can see the construction.

(pssst....MacGuffin....this post doesn't even concern you, so you don't even have to post about how you didn't read it.)

"The thing is, one can change a tv channel. It takes a petition to change a billboard."

That's true, but I think the vast majority of people(including the teen girls everyone's so worried about) aren't going to take it literally as it's made pretty clear that it's a joke. Maybe I'm giving people too much credit, but I'd like to think that the world isn't THAT stupid. I think it's quite possible that most of the people who take this billboard literally are the ones who are offended by it.

So a bunch of ugly women were butt hurt that they were not actually getting whistled at and complained enough saying it was harassment. idiots. it was a clever sign, just leave them alone.

@MeGrendel: I saw my name at the top.

Of your post.

But as I explained before, I

honestly

don't. Read your posts. Because they're so

full of dist... (oh look - a squirrel!)

ractions, making them

painfully disjointed and

incoherent.

"From an early age, people need to teach their kids that what they see on TV, in magazines, and billboards doesn't necessarily reflect the real world and shouldn't be taken too seriously"

That's a valid point. I suppose there's a lot of stuff on tv that others find offensive, but I don't. The thing is, one can change a tv channel. It takes a petition to change a billboard.

" why does it bother you and others that people with daughters might find it offensive?"

Simply because they blow it out of proportion. The sign is harmless. Teens are an ignorant bunch, but I don't believe that just because a sign makes a joke about construction workers possibly whistling at them, that they're automatically going to think it's okay if it actually ends up happening to them.. Furthermore, it's the parent's job to teach their children what to do and how to react when they're harassed. It's a topic that should be included when your kid is getting to that age where they start to develop physically. I see this as a way for parents to point the finger and blame someone else for their lack of communication. From an early age, people need to teach their kids that what they see on TV, in magazines, and billboards doesn't necessarily reflect the real world and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

@PizzaPits: Ok, so it's not offensive to you, but why does it bother you and others that people with daughters might find it offensive? THAT was the point.

"Since you seem to have missed the point of this post.....Your Mom. Now, STFU. (no offense)"

I didn't miss the point of this post. I read the article. People were worried about their teen daughters getting the message that it's okay for them to be harassed by guys just because of how they look. The title of the post asked, "Is this Billboard Offensive?" My opinion: no it isn't. I actually posted my opinion about the article earlier. It's a few pages in. So you can STFU.

MacGuffin-"it's quite entertaining to see someone so willing to lay their ignorance bare."

Which why your posts are so popular. Tedious, but occasionally entertaining.

jtrebowski-"if we spent less time bitching about that and more time trying to be polite and NOT offend each other,we'd live in a better world."

Who says you have a right to not be offended? Why should anyone put any effort in not offending you? It's still a free-country. People can be as offensive as they want.

And you have the right to be offended. So what? The fact that you are offended does not affect anyone elses world at all. Nor is it worth a cash payout.

And how would living in a world where NO one is EVER offended be 'better'? Or are you still waiting for them to pass Amendments 211, 212, and 213 to the Constitution? (read "Harrison Bergeron")

I laughed, was I offended, damn no. There are way to many really offensive people around to be worried about an half witted sign.

I went to bed, but I 'think' the point some are trying to make is this- that some women find being whistled and barracked unpleasant- not all workers do it (this advert is unfair on those people)- but often whistles become shouts of either approval or disdain. Given that it is rare that a woman is whistled at for being chic- more often because she looks beddable- there are plenty of people who would assume that this poster is condoning what they see as rude and uncouth behaviour by workers. Generally we try not to condone rude and uncouth behaviour. Looking like a dowdy frump does NOT exclude one from barracking- it just changes its tone- which is just as unpleasant.

That's cute and clever, and playing off a cheesy (outdated) stereotype. People get offended way too easily.

Oh now we're not free speech defenders... Maybe in one of tomorrow's posts we'll replay that card.

Everyone please sort out your own "rights and responsibilities" list in your brain. I'm tired of BS people flip flopping their arsenal of "principles" depending on whether they agree or disagree with something.
