well, i cant believe the most selfish people (according to this add) in the world would not help a kid out, but then they were prolly teaching the kid to get their own goddamned lighter themselves

I smoked for 20 years starting at 9 years old. Stayed off for three years, relapsed for a little over a year.
Last cigarrette was May 8th.

Being able to come to the logical conclusion that smoking is bad for your does not mean that you can always overcome the physical and mental drive to smoke. Fighting any addiction is hard work.

@MeGrendel: Leary has said many good things, hasn't he?

I have no problem with someone smoking, so long as they aren't standing right outside a door or blowing it in my face. I don't pester smokers so I expect the same in kind. I used to smoke, and one day as I was walking to a physics lecture I decided to have a smoke as I walked. An annoying girl walking a good 4-5 metres behind me started fake coughing, small at first, but then as she caught up to me was fake hacking, then said "Smoking is a rude and disgusting habit," to which I replied "So is talking to strangers."

I agree, people feed their kids pharmaceutical cocaine to get them to study, and use pharmaceutical heroine for pain. They irradiate themselves constently, over-use and then under-use antibotics causing resistant viruses. Everybody fights enough skin cancer each day from UV rays. Obesity is still just as big a killer. And...a whole bunch of other poo.

The point is, your gonna die and it's gonna hurt. But everyone seems to do something unhealthy everyday and it's impossible not to! I get sick of people chanting "It could hurt you," so could everything else in this world.

I'm not saying, do anything you want because anything can happen, but smoking is taken far to seriously and it takes the spotlight away from real health issues.

Big differance between and adult making a choice and a child.
Why not run a commercial of a kid asking for a condom? Or passing around a bottle of booze? or any other adult activity.

Fail commercial.

Reminds me of those missionaries/evangelicals that give you a "million dollar bill" and troll you into turning it over to reveal the saviourist message on the reverse.

ChrisP12-"Do you believe that the choices we make shouldn't be judged by others."

All choices of individuals and groups are judged by everyone. It's human nature. People who 'claim' not to judge are lying.

My problem is when someone deems their judgement to be superior enough to determine what consequences others should suffer for their choices.

I am not one to say that 'if you do this, you can't enjoy the access to the same care the rest of us do'. Smokers are welcome to the best medical care they can afford (and, yes, I expect them to pay for it).

Every pays the consequences for thier decisions. If you want to make it illegal, find. Try. But as long as it's legal it's not anyone's plaace to put false consequences in the way because the action is not politically correct.

mal_BB-"where as all of the examples you provided MAY be linked to cancer"

All of the example have proven to increase your risk of cancer. Just as smoking has proven to increase your rish of cancer. If you smoke, it is not guranteed that you will automatically develop cancer, just that your chances are increased. (Heavy smoking runs in my family, cancer does not.)

BTW, I do not consider myself a smoker. I can't stand cigs, but enjoy the occasional expensive cigar.

I smoked for years. It's not that hard. it's just the same as fighting any urge. Like the urge to masturbate in public, or punch a woman in the face everytime she calls you a no good useless lump, or even take a creamy poo on a slide. You just say naaah

Name calling aside MeGrendel. Do you believe that the choices we make shouldn't be judged by others. Is smoking a rational choice?

But in fairness to you, (over here in the UK at least) our nhs simply wouldn't survive without the tax revenue brought in by smokers, so to ban them from having their various diseases treated would be ungrateful and unfair to say the least.

@MeGrendel-where as all of the examples you provided MAY be linked to cancer, Smoking is directly linked to cancer, and a whole host of other diseases. It's spurious to suggest that people who eat hot dogs (and are not morbidly obese) are in the same boat as people who smoke.

MeGrendel, my god you might be right, maybe I am obsessed with phallic symbols. For instance when I think of you I thinks - what a d*ck.
It's a choice (that you are and should be free to make) but it still reflects poorly on your judgement.

deputy-" refuse a treatment for lung cancer because he brought it to himself"

Why are you just limiting it to lung cancer?

Why shouldn't the skateboarder be refused medical treatment for his broken leg?
Someone who choses to ride a horse should not be able to get his arm set.
The cyclist who flew over his handlebars should not recieve treatment for that head wound.
Injured in a Car Wreck? Oh well. Your choice to be in the car.

In fact, the leading cause of preventable death is hypertension. So all you uptight people are just out of luck. No Medicine For You!

Sexually transmitted disease ranks in the top five. That's voluntary. So, from now on, only virgins can get medical treatment (if they're not uptight). (Congrats, you still qualify.)

deputy-"I think when you decide to poison your body, you forfeit al rights to treatments for diseases that are caused by that choice."

I pay for my own medical expenses, so it's a moot point. But, unless you're a hermit that breathes bottled air and lives off of tofu, you're in the same boat.

Do you eat fries? (or any fried food?) May cause cancer (acrylamides formed during frying are a factor).
Hot dogs? May cause cancer.
Drink wine? Increases your chances of cancer.
Use deodorant? May cause cancer.
Ever had an X-ray? Causes 700 cancer cases per year in Britain.
Drink Bottled water? May cause cancer.

I'd be happy to give you a list of at least 200 things to avoid in order to lower your chance at getting cancer. So, until you give up EVERYTHING that may cause cancer, shut the hell up about other's choices. (btw..should you decide to follow the list, you will have to remove your testicle, if life hasn't already done so)

@megrendel: They make a choice alright, but are they willing to accept the consequences of their choice? I think I still have to here the first smoker say he will refuse a treatment for lung cancer because he brought it to himself.
I think when you decide to poison your body, you forfeit al rights to treatments for diseases that are caused by that choice.
Same goes for being an organ donor. If you decide to not be an organ donor, you should have no rights for receiving organs.
