i just went looking through my pictures and 2 years ago i seem to have taken the same picture from the other side. i would have been standing at the bottom of the ramp at the far end of this photo. |

I was stumped!!! But, seriously... it's pretty cool, just follow the rings and where the branches occur and you have a perfect tree inside the tree. An idea so simple, it had to take a while for someone to think of it. |

This is at the AGO downtown in Toronto. It is indeed an awesome piece. I studied it for 10 or 15 minutes in disbelief but it is a real carving. |

Hauswyfe I think you missed the point. I assume, considering what the description says, my limited knowledge of trees and from the photo, that the sculptor has shaved away the rings of growth to reveal what the tree looked like when it was very young. As trees grow by adding rings once a year (the dark bit is the slower growth in the winter, the light bit us the faster growth in the summer) taking the tree back a certain number of layers is an interesting and pretty view of it's past. |
