Monday, June 11, 2012 12:52:21 AM @chick: "to imitate a pig in a feeding trough?" Culture difference is all. You resemble a pig at a feeding trough in other ways in other culture. |

Saturday, June 09, 2012 9:10:41 AM If people are offended by a smile, the hell with 'em. BTW, according to Desmond Morris in his book 'Gestures' the thumb-bite gesture (as in R&J) has been argued to have originated in the 12th century when the citizens of Milan rebelled and expelled the wife of Barbarossa by tieing her to a mule facing backwards. The Emperor captured the city and brough the mule along. The principle citizens were brought before him with nooses round their necks and a fig was inserted in the mules arse. If they wanted to live they had to pluck it out with their teeth. Those who did were known as 'fig-pluckers' and permanently dishonoured. Morris considers this unproven but possible. The 'fig' gesture was already long established as a general 'up yours' but after the 12th century became a more specific gesture indicating cowardice and dishonour. |

Saturday, June 09, 2012 7:00:08 AM interestingly, smiling at a random stranger in the west is usually interpreted as you're being stupid.

Friday, June 08, 2012 9:09:52 PM I agree with the smiling thing. We've become a culture of mindlessly smiling drones. |

Friday, June 08, 2012 7:23:32 PM So, the next time a suicide bomber blows up a bunch of innocent people in the Mid-East, the proper response would be a left-handed thumbs-up. Amirite ?? |

Friday, June 08, 2012 5:52:42 PM On entering an Underground train in London, it is very rude to just sit down without first shaking hands and introducing youself to everyone in the carriage. If the train is full, you should shout your name and where you are from loudly over the heads of passengers. |

Friday, June 08, 2012 4:27:08 PM @PinkHomicide: It is like this in China. When you are eating in a restaurant, then you usually eat just meat and so on(no rice at all!) and at the end they will bring the rice. Then you just eat rice but leave something in the bowl. This indicates that you simply can not eat any more and that there was enough food for you. If you eat all of the rice, it indicates that the food was not enough or that you didn't like the food(the host usually chooses the dishes, you usually can not decide what you want to eat. the host will just choose what he likes and what he thinks the others would like) This does not apply when you are eating at home or it is a casual occasion. Just finish your plate. |

Friday, June 08, 2012 3:05:19 PM Yeah, they're right about this one:
being offensive in Turkey. It's basically like saying, "Look at me. No, in the eyes. Feck you feckstick and your family". Then again, I don't mind offending Turkish blokes - I've never met blokes that were so obnoxious and lecherous as I did out there. A Turk I know once told me that they get all their ideas on the morals of Western women from pornography, and I can believe it. Anyway, languages is a bit of a hobby of mine (even though I'm crap at them), so, top tip for you ladies out there: if you ever find yourself being pestered by a local in Istanbul, use the phrase "ayeep" (pronounced exactly as spelled, and short for "ayip ettin" - "shame on you"). It's what the local girls say to shame lecherous men into behaving themselves.

Friday, June 08, 2012 3:03:25 PM Handful of years ago I had a teacher tell our class that in a certain culture/country(was long time ago, so I've forgotten). That if you are eating as a guest to always leave a few bites behind, as it suggests that you're full - and have been well fed Where as my friend's Italian family would be insulted if I didn't finish my plate. |

Friday, June 08, 2012 1:55:12 PM screw other countries - they make no sense, and some are just gutter-minded. western culture and mannerisms are the way forward, and the rest of the world will just have to bring up the rear - oops, didn't offend anyone, did I? |
