Well oldollie, those scenarios are completely dissimilar. You get an incompetent teacher, as I'm sure plenty of us have had, you aren't going to die or go to prison. At worst it will put a kid a little behind, but usually teachers, no matter how bad, don't teach nothing. Even having a textbook would ensure that. Second, there are usually other sources of academic help provided by the school. Third, the school, by their own will or forced by parents, wouldn't keep such a teacher for long. Also, if the consequences of having a poor teacher are really akin to a botched surgery or criminal conviction, you can always ask to be placed in a dif. class if necessary.
I completely agree that our ed. system is pretty awful and based primarily on old nonsensical tradition and not on reality or what's effective, but I disagree that said 10-20% of lazy teachers (although calling someone 'lazy' is subjective and comes in degrees)actually have much of anything to do with that. |

jtrebowski, it takes more than good teachers to create an effective education system. Yes, the vast majority are intelligent, dedicated professionals, but that won't overcome a stifling liberal government bureaucracy that controls the textbooks, curriculum, and disciplinary rules. It also doesn't make up for the 10-20% of teachers who are lazy, incompetent, pernicious, or some combination thereof.
How does this work for you?
"Come to our hospital. Only 10% of our doctors are incompetent. Sorry, you don't get to choose which one will operate on you."
"Hire one of our attorneys to defend you. If you're innocent, you have an 85% chance of being acquitted!"
"Let us do your taxes. Only 12% of our clients are in prison for tax evasion!"
Yet somehow, those odds are good enough for our children. |

If you consider those things to be important social indicators of 'success', go right ahead. I prefer to aspire to a greater calling as I pursue my Ph.D. in nuclear physics and engineering, which doesn't give me much time to work a traditional job that I can easily list in my FB status. And, because I don't value marriage as the be all, end all of social ascension, I sort of think my 'single' status is something of which to be proud."
