Ah HA! So it is. I'm embarrassed to admit that that didn't even occur to me. Good call.

that is a scale model . . . a real blackbird is longer than the entire contraption we see in the pic

I've met former pilots of the SR-71 (and heard one really hilarious control tower tape). The Blackbird is basically in afterburner at all times. It has enough ignitor to ignite the afterburners 16 times. According to the pilots, the two engines' afterburners NEVER kickoff at exactly the same time. Makes for a rough kick.

I would believe that was a model, though.

Ya know, this is weird. I don't much care for calling "photoshop," but I'm genuinely trying to figure this one out. Someone already noted that it appears to be an SR-71 (there sure as hell aren't many planes that look like that, and the others are even less possible than the SR-71), but they most definitely never would have allowed someone to pull a sign around behind one. And besides, the absolute last flight of a Blackbird was in 1999; in fact, only 2 flyable Blackbirds even exist anymore, both possessed by NASA (citation). So unless that photo was taken before 1999--I guess maybe the sign was put up to lament the final end and retirement of the plane--I don't see how this picture could have ever happened. Although hot damn, I would've liked to have seen it, when it did.

Sorry, long post. Speculation, woo.onefallswoop

The Blackbird was not a ramjet. This Grendel cat knows what's up. If that spike failed to do its job, the shockwave would move back into the intake, then the engine shut down (known as an "unstart") and gave the pilot the ride of his freakin' life. No fun at all.

To be precise:
Pratt & Whitney J58-P4 : A unique hybrid, the engine can be thought of as a turbojet inside a ramjet. At lower speeds, the turbojet provided most of the compression and most of the energy from fuel combustion. At higher speeds, the turbojet largely ceased to provide thrust; instead, air was compressed by the shock cones and fuel burned in the afterburner.

So, like I said: Perfect Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow...until it got into the higher Machs and it was just Squeeze Bang Blow (and even the Bang was minimal, as they had to limit the fuel put into the engine so that its parts would not melt).

The limiting factor was the heat on the materials of the engine. A 90's study determined that the same design with newer technology materials would give you at least Mach 6 speeds.

KICK-ASS RAMJET AIRCRAFT FROM HELL

More precisely a turbo-ramjet. Ramjets can't ignite at takeoff.

"You have no idea what it's made of, thus you can't possibly know that."

We since it's red, we do know that it's make from something that has pigment (paint, colored plastic, etc.) And there is pretty much nothing with colored pigment that will withstand the temperatures coming from the backside of that bird.

greenbasterd-"since when do jets pull those signs?"

That's not a 'jet', that's a 'FREAKIN KICK-ASS RAMJET AIRCRAFT FROM HELL',

Also known as the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft that we know about. It's got the fine are of Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow down to an art. The Spike that projects from the front of the Ramjet engines actually withdraws into the engine during supersonic flight so as to keep a Mach 1 shockwave formed in front of the compressor even at speeds in excess of Mach 3.

I have no idea what it's made of, but it has to withstand this:
