thubanstar-"You guys love wallowing in hate and dissent."

Not at all, but we do recognize that your new 'Occupy' movement is neither new nor original, nor accomplishing anything.

thubanstar-"Who are you helping?"

To name a few:
I paint faces at Childrens hospitals, Childrens Rehab Services and the local United Cerebral Palsy pre-school.
I build props for choirs and whatever's needed at local elementary and middle schools.
I build wheelchair ramps at houses that need them.
I help build playgrounds.
I do desktop publishing of flyers and booklets for all of the above.
I design flyers, t-shirts etc for charity programs.
All of the above is volunteer work, many times the supplies coming out of my pocket.

One thing I DON'T do is hang aroud parks and highways holding signs screaming about 'Da Rich' under the delusion that it's accomplishing something.

McGrendel and OldOllie, y'all are part of the reason life on this planet sucks.

Say whatever you want about my knowledge. The fact is, I'm politely debating here, and I'm hoping for change.

You guys love wallowing in hate and dissent. What is it you want? Attention trolls always get? Who are you helping? Don't ask me, I DO help, but what you YOU do?

Just troll, troll, troll.... go plant some flowers or something, help an old person across the street. No one takes you seriously (I don't) I am just amusing myself for a second replying to you as I go do other, better things.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people would want to get rid of unions.

Unions aren't the problem. It's the government who puts their boot on the necks of employers so the unions can f*** them straight up the ass.
If employees want to join a union, fine.
If they want to make demands regarding work rules and compensation, fine.
If the boss doesn't want to agree, fine.
If the union wants to call a strike, fine.
If the boss wants to replace them all permanently, fine.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works.

I'm sick of them on both sides. I'm sick of the Koch brothers trying to buy the country.

Don't give me that smug, holier-than-thou "both sides" bull$#!+. You rag on the Koch brothers, who employ 1000s of people, but you seem to have no problem with that f***ing ex-Nazi George Soros who's never made a single penny in his entire worthless life that wasn't someone else's loss. He's spent at least 30 f***ing times as much funding anti-American left-wing causes as the Koch brothers have spent trying to defend the principles of liberty on which this country was founded.

Well you can take you sanctimonious, condescending liberalism, fold it 5 times, and shove it straight up your stinking socialist ass.

hubanstar-"but times, they are a changin"

Only the technology and players change, human nature does not. There is nothing new under the sun. No feel-good revolution songs are going to change it.

Knew a girl in highschool. She, too, was under the impression that the Human Race was 'enlightened'. We were discussing the wars of the 20th century. She made the statement 'It's a good thing that'll never happen anymore." I asked her to explain. "The world is too advanced for people to resort to war anymore".

After I managed to get the look of incredulity off my face I asked her to make a bet: That the US would be involved in another war before our 10th High School reunion. She agreed.

I should of went to my 10 year reunion...She owes me $100.

hubanstar-"Not many times in history have you seen just ordinary people get together and have events to try and honestly make the world a better place."

The Minoans, the Aztecs, the Olmec, the Babylonians, the Phoenicians, the Mayans, the Toltecs, the Maurya Empire, the Incans and Ancient Egypt all had various groups that thought they were 'enlightened'. That thought they were 'working against the man' (or in the case of the Minoans, 'the woman'). That thought they were going to make the world 'a better place'.

They were all wrong (in fact, they were all evenutally lost as civilizations).

You, hubanstar, are not 'enlightened'. You're suffering from delusions of mediocrity.

hubanstar-"It's getting different."

No, it's not. If you think any of these movements or attitudes are 'new' or 'different' you just demonstrate an ignorance of history.

I am on the fence regarding unions. Unions historically have definitely made working conditions more fair when companies try to take advantage. I just wish I didn't see so many people take advantage of their union status to be lazy and extort money out of people who want them to do their job. In the area I work, many times my clients are forced to pay union people to sit around and shadow people who are actually doing the work because the union people are so unqualified it makes more sense to pay double to be able to hire the more qualified non-union workers you actually want. Plus, many times they work really slowly to rack up hours, disappear completely for hours and refuse to do their job unless you grease their palm extra $. We've all heard about teachers who slack off once they get tenure. Not all teachers but enough to be noticeable. This isn't what unions were supposed to be about. Seeing all of this has soured me on the idea of unions and I would never belong to one.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people would want to get rid of unions. AJ suggested that we have enough laws in place to make unions obsolete, but it's not like big companies with money pay lobbyists to change laws at all...

Also without unions you are relying on the company to doll out raises, set a fair number of vacation/sick days, keep the workplace safe etc. That's too much trust to put into any company, imo.

MeGrendl,

Every? Er... no. Most of the time, it was rich people starting wars and using the "we're gonna get a lot of peace out of this" line to get people to enlist and fight the wars... maybe that's what you are thinking of. It was always a lie.. but times, they are a changin'.

Not many times in history have you seen just ordinary people get together and have events to try and honestly make the world a better place. Can't think of ONE TIME before the 20th century when that happened, can you?

Maybe Woodstock and the Occupy movement were flaky, but they WERE a gathering of ordinary folk who, among other reasons both pure and cynical, WERE there to support one another and send a message of peace.

It's getting different. Peace may not prevail, but I do see that for thousands of years we lived in the time of aristocracy, then a time of great social change. I do think now we live in the time of the common man, and we need to keep it that way.

@Auburnjunky: Much like communism, the trickle down effect looks pretty good on paper. It's turns out however that that's not how events unfold in practise.. You have to deal with reality when making policy..

VirtualParty-"This guy completely killed the concept of unions in his state and completely disbanded them."

You're either lying or an idiot (or both).

Union are still alive and well in Wisconsin. What was killed off was the Unions' ability to rape the taxpayers of the state by holding their children and services hostage.

thubanstar-"The world and humanity is TRYING to go from a brutal, intolerant society to a peaceful one."

EVERY civilizations, during EVERY century believed they were going from 'a brutal, intolerant society to a peaceful one.' They all believed they were 'enlightened.'

They were ALL wrong, just as you are.

"I hope his hate eats a hole in his stinking socialist gut."

Good for you, OldOllie. You have taken a concept like a moderate Republican, like the people I grew up around, and made them sound like intolerant monsters who stop at nothing to be satisfied.

Extreme point of views are NOT the way to keep a country going. I'm sick of them on both sides. I'm sick of the Koch brothers trying to buy the country.

I was about to say I was sick of Democrat whining, but at least there are more states which gays can be married in and some protesting. At least they are trying a little, they need to do more positive actions.

The world and humanity is TRYING to go from a brutal, intolerant society to a peaceful one. We're not real good at it, and, if we don't get better, we will all destroy one another.

So, OldOllie, get a grip. I don't hate you, but I'm very disapponted with you as a person.

Shame on you.

VP: This guy completely killed the concept of unions in his state and completely disbanded them.

Total Bullsh|t. Walker hasn't forced any unions to disband. I don't know where you're getting your left wing propaganda from but I suggest you quit going there and learn some real facts.

Wisconsin has went from deficit spending into a surplus and he hasn't lowered any teachers wages or forced them to quit their union.

This guy completely killed the concept of unions in his state and completely disbanded them. How are you even talking about their spending here if they no longer exist?

You live in Canada yet are afflicted with the blindness that I am ashamed to see in many fellow Americans.

It's not left vs right. It's "what is right?" and this man is a criminal.

The reason hes sad is because the candidate who won( republican ) has a long standing history of being bought and traded as a commodity who works for special interest groups that screw over the common man and cause job loss.

This is the person who won.

This candidate had 27 million dollars more worth donation. It truly shows that politicians can be bought and elections can be rigged. This is very dire.

Good luck to anyone in Wisconson, and any democrats left LEAVE THE STATE!

Unions Outspent Repubs! still lost!

The MSM has been trying to blame "big Republican money" but have ignored the spending by the Unions entirely.

I didn't read the comments, but would bet $0.05 some whiney lefty parroted the MSM mantra...

wiscesq-"You think liberals must be mentally ill?"

Actually, no (at least, not all of them..some I'm pretty sure are, thought). I was just citing nonsense in response to your nonsense.

wiscesq-"I'm crushing your arguments"

Wow, not only mentally ill but delusional, too.

wiscesq-"they're the ones with the burden of proof. "

And many times NO amount of proof is enough for Unions. Just as a person being convicted of child molestation of a student by a jury of her peers (based on overwhelming evidence) and sentenced to a 10 year term was not 'proof enough' to the Teacher's Union that she should be fired.

patchgrabber-" the blatant bias in that book is overwhelming"

Obviously! I've never read it nor would I put any credence in it. It was just a response to other nonsense (see above). I've seen similar books for Conservatives, too.

@MeGrendel: Wow, the blatant bias in that book is overwhelming. The language he uses, such as "assault on freedom", "liberalism's irrationality" etc. frame the issue in such a way as to assert that liberals are evil, lack morals, and all have mental problems. The synopsis seems like it just labels liberals as having mental issues and childhood trauma that manifest into downright insanity. Looks more like a feel-good-reaffirms-my-views -and-satisfies-my-hatred-of-liberals book rather than something trying to explain actual liberal thought. I bet it made you feel all warm and fuzzy when you read it.

@MeGrendel- really? You think liberals must be mentally ill? Well, I suppose if it makes you feel better that the only reason I'm crushing your arguments and demonstrating that you have little or no knowledge of economics or capital markets is because I'm a crazy liberal, then I guess we can all make believe for the sake of your delicate ego.

Regarding the time taken for investigations, I won't claim that every investigation delay is caused by management, but they are the ones bringing the charges, they're the ones assembling any documentation, they're the ones with the burden of proof.

Often the admin will drag things out hoping the employee will find another job and resign, eliminating the need for the arbitration. You would be foolish to underestimate how lazy some public adminstrators can be.
