The reason that people want marriage vs a civil union is:
Married couples have 1,138 federal rights, protections and responsibilities such as:

Social Security benefits upon death, disability or retirement of spouse, as well as benefits for minor children.
Family and Medical Leave protections to care for a new child or a sick or injured family member
Workers' Compensation protections for the family of a worker injured on the job
Access to COBRA insurance benefits so the family doesn't lose health insurance when one spouse is laid off
ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) protections such as the ability to leave a pension, other than Social Security, to your spouse
Exemptions from penalties on IRA and pension rollovers
Exemptions from estate taxes when a spouse dies
Exemptions from federal income taxes on spouse's health insurance
The right to visit a sick or injured loved one, have a say in life a

Thank you markust123

I thought the other people would get that I meant the comments. Some of them are just rude and ignorant.

I'm absolutely hating this post. I am not gay but I feel that this is not right on many levels. Neil Patrick Harris (the guy on the right) is clearly happy being gay. Just because he doesn't like women don't mean he is any different to you or I.
He is clearly showing his kids how much he loves them and showing them he is a fun loving guy who will do anything with his husband, David Burtka, to show those kids how much they mean to them!

So stop be homophobic, otherwise I shall leave the site and never come back!

Everyone has rights so leave them be!

For Thousands of years a marriage has been predominantly known to be between one woman and one man. - - - tell that to the muzzies . . .

We have two gay couples babysitting our kids several times a week and they're great at that. I actually know A LOT of gays and lesbians and none of them is bad with kids. So from what I know there's absolutely no problem with them adopting children.

It is NOBODY's business what goes on in any bedroom but YOUR own. Leave the poor gays alone. When your front yard is as pretty as theirs you might have a say . . .

"Human history is ignore AT OUR PERIL! There's a f-ing good reason why we "modern" humans do things, and it's from 200K years of trial and error! To overturn that wisdom on under 50 years of "enlightenment" is suicidal."

Millions of gay people currently live in monogamous relationships. They just don't have a piece of paper giving them certain basic rights and privileges given to traditional married people. Are you saying giving gay people the right to make financial and health decisions for each other is going to bring down society all of a sudden?

What EXACTLY do you expect to happen that is so cataclysmic?

"I have a problem with homosexuals trying to define their relationships as the same or equal to my own. It's like comparing apples and meatballs."

Apparently because, to you, "marriage" only means you can screw your wife on a regular basis and possibly pop out a kid. That's the only difference between your marriage and theirs.

Incidentally, does anyone from either side disagree with my 3-part setup? I haven't seen anyone disagreeing with it, ever, and I'm curious as to whether anyone does. It looks to me like it would neatly stop all the fighting. Which is probably why it's not being suggested - too many people on both sides are more interested in fighting and imposing dominance than in a solution.

I have a problem with homosexuals trying to define their relationships as the same or equal to my own. It's like comparing apples and meatballs.

Why?

I've known a fair few homosexual couples, including some who are married. I've seen charming old couples who've been together for decades. I've seen violently abusive relationships. I've seen everything in between. What I haven't seen is any difference between heterosexual couples and homosexual couples. Lots of differences between individual relationships, obviously, but nothing at all that differentiates all heterosexual relationships from all homosexual ones.

I wouldn't say they're equal. I'd say they're identical.

@Angilion: I'd love to hear details, but IAB is hardly the place to discuss such things, eh?
It's AMAZING to me how anyone "opposed to gay rights" must somehow be a "missionary position only" "super straight" person.

It was a direct reply and rebuttal to Gerry1of1's baseless accusations, i.e. it was relevant.

@insane_ai: I agree: Human history is ignore AT OUR PERIL! There's a f-ing good reason why we "modern" humans do things, and it's from 200K years of trial and error! To overturn that wisdom on under 50 years of "enlightenment" is suicidal.

Slavery goes back at least as far as recorded history and was often commonplace enough to be normal. It's probably as old as marriage. No way of knowing, since both predate recorded history, but there's no reason why it shouldn't be.

So...do you think slavery is a drating good thing and it's suicide to outlaw it? If not, why not?

How about universal suffrage and a representative democracy? That's a pretty new idea, so your argument applies against that too.

Have you worked for your lord recently?

I could go on, but I think the point is made. Learning from history doesn't mean change is suicidal. Sometimes the lesson to be learned is that there's a better way.

You made the statement, I just asked for clarification / justification.

You aren't stupid enough to think that's what you were doing.

You made up something, claimed I said it and went off ranting about different things and claimed I said those too, then you demanded that I support *your* statements.

Go drat yourself. I've no obligation to support your lies. They've nothing to do with me.

One church accepts everyone as equals. Another church of the same denomination uses the bible to judge a whole group of people. One is loving and tolerant of all mankind. The other...
