Any student that misses 18days of school and is still an honor student is probably smarter than the redneck judge sentencing her. In fact I think the judge had second thoughts.
It's such a shame that the US Justice system appears to be driven by the amount of public embarrassment its officials are subjected to. At least this idiot got forced to do a U-turn, even if it was too late to do any good to anyone. |

It's high school mate. Being an 'honors' student is a joke, especially when the teachers help you out. (Which they would have for this girl, I assure you) There's not really any punishment for grade inflation in high school. It's frowned upon by parents and things, but in the end it really doesn't matter. The better question is, why weren't her parents punished A LONG time ago? As far as I know, a parent deserting children under the age of 18 is illegal. |

@casidhe Did you even read all of my posts? I don't agree with this law either, but the law IS the law. Our justice system is supposed to be 'blind'. That's why you'll see statues or paintings of a woman with a blindfold over her face in many judicial buildings. If YOU don't like the law, then do something about it. The judge just did his job. |

Most of the comments under this post make me shrink with horror.Humanity dragged itself out of the slime to evolve into what ? Where is your compassion,your concern,your kindness ?
The statement echoed throughout this thread that "the law is the law" is inane and vile . It was once the law to burn witches and it was once considered acceptable send 5 year old's down the coal mines or own slaves and whip them to death if you felt like it....was that o.k with you too ?
Exactly how is a jail sentence of any length helpful to this young woman ? She needs helping not harming. This is a gross human rights abuse and I am sickened by anyone defending it. |

Seriously, if you dumbasses would just pay attention to your state politics in the first place, then you wouldn't have to bitch about the law AFTER your ass gets thrown in jail. |

@talon0325 First off, you need to calm the hell down. Secondly, did you actually read the story? The comment the judge made wasn't 'racist'. When he said 'One of em' he obviously meant people who break the law, probably specifically people who skip school.
Also, the reason she was tried as an adult is because that's the way the law in her state works. I personally think it's stupid, but it's the damn law. Your emotions and personal opinion can't and shouldn't be able to invalidate a written law put in place by our elected officials. If you don't like the law, do something about it.
Lastly, everyone is overreacting. The sentence is EXTREMELY light. Why is this even a big deal? ONE day in jail and a hundred dollar fine? Do you realize how MUCH you have to miss school in most states for something like this to even come up? |

You know, there are programs to help kids like this. I know a person who managed to hold 2 jobs and only attend one hour of high school a week and she graduated with honors. Attendance is severely overrated. |

Hey Eddy? Land of the free? When the hell did anyone send kids to jail for missing school? We give them detention or suspend them for a few days and it affects their marks. This kid gets a criminal record for missing school? WTF is your country going to do next? Make alcatraz a home for truant students? But then again, She is an immigrant and so are the parents that abandoned the family. Guess thats ok in the american eyes. as long as the courts have some useless poo to send people to jail. No sense dealing with important issues like murders and robbery/rape and theft. Cops are to busy busting truant students. |

Judge is an idiot. She works two jobs and sacrifices her own sleep so she can keep up with her studies. She's suffered from exhaustion by doing all this. And he wants to teach her a lesson? She's not cutting class to go to the mall. She doesn't work, she doesn't eat. |

Way to say it SmagBoy1. " them" are not part of what the judge wants in his county. But he's ok with letting "them law enforcment people" do their job. Arresting truant students. There "aint" no crime in Texass. 'cept to let judge dickwad get into a courtroom. Jeese, I'm glad to never have to go back there. Racism is rampant down there. 'merica is all about the freedom to abandon your kids to fend for themselves. She has 2 siblings, 2 jobs , and will miss another day of school. But her parents get to do whatever they want, without the kids or responsibility. How many years would that dick set her up for if she left her family behind and said F$%k it, I can't miss anymore school for you kids? Texass is something to be proud to live in. Most places, the parents would be in jail, Not in Judge Dickheads county. Yeeeehaww for redneck mentality. Glad I never have to ever go back there.
