Hero's "steam engine" was only a novelty because because it was good for little else. Blowing jets of steam into the air is an extremely inefficient way of converting fuel into forward motion. It could not have powered a usable car.

A good point, but it did prove the concept of motion from steam and could have been a starting point. Perhaps a steam turbine might have been invented much less than 1700 years later.

I didn't mean to imply that Hero's device could have powered a car itself.

Damn straight @aubururnjunky where's the carefully measured rows of crucified slaves? Sadly this is the first thing I thought of when I saw the post.

They crucified the survivors of the Third Servile war along this road, between Capua and Rome.

Spartacus either died in battle, or was among them.

Gah, missed a bit. Roman roads were built on solid rock *where possible*. Obviously not always.

Why 2,024 years ago? The Appian way is older than 2,024 years and it was very important before then. There are sections still in better shape than the part shown here, too.

A related fact that you can't tell from a photo like this - Roman roads were up to 12 feet deep. They built them on solid rock and they'd dig down as far as needed to get to it.

Too bad they didn't build cars too! This is my Tiberius XXI! It has 35 million miles on it! Been in my family for 100 generations now.

100 generations of people and 250 generations of horses :)

The steam engine was invented in Roman times (in Alexandria, which was Greek, but when it was under Roman rule). Oddly, nobody made the jump to finding a use for it. It was a novelty entertainment. If they had, Romans probably would have made powered cars.

If only all the roads ever built would be as straight and pretty as this one.

*sigh*

I find this fascinating. Doubt if anything built in the U.S. now would last that long... perhaps a dam or two.

Good one.

2: Stop whining. My "Mad Turk" was original and still didn't get approved.

Stop moaning, it's a nice pic and it's now my new background for a while. Replacing the mad family with the box on a zipline.

If you want better stuff, submit it. Unless it involves rednecks.

You post this poo but you rejected the Redneck Amusement park because it was posted in 2006? I-A-B is boooooooooooring. It's summer time. Time for fun. School time is time to learn. Don't steal my time, I-A-B. It's been happening a lot lately.

It's cool. But I don't know if this is IAB worthy in this context.
