It would have been funny if
1) Someone had been set up with blankets and chairs on top of it.
2) Someone had seen them doing it and dug it up before they got there so they couldn't find it.
3) The police came and forced them to leave before they could dig down far enough to find it.

A chest that big filled with gold would be so damn heavy you couldn't lift it even with ten men.
A single standard bar of gold is over 45lbs. That trunk would fit about 50 bars and weigh well over a ton.
