Well eddy, keep in mind that plenty of politically-clueless already think that the pres. pretty much is the entire government since he's the only politician they even know of, and don't care enough to learn otherwise, so hey, it's not like obama saying 'You guys realize I can't just instantly make and change laws at a whim, right?' won't help anything.

As for his relationship with the media, unfortunately to be in politics he has to media whore. I've heard that politics have become like a sick reality show, and politicians have to play the game. It's not about what's good for the country. It's about shutting little people up and making big players happy. That's just how our embarassment of a system is.

Anyways, no, I don't think obama is amazing, but when it comes to politicians 'ok' is the best we can hope for. I appreciate your civil approach to the issue though. It's refreshing compared to many obama detractors...

MeGrendel: That's because they re-assigned 2009 spending to Bush.

You might need to adjust your bifocals. I"m pretty sure that doesn't say "Bush."

Wow! Play up the race card. Explain why the right doesn't like Polosi, Reed, Kerry, Clinton, and Clinton, Gore, Carter. It certainly isn't their race. Quit being so superficial. Its politics. Plain and simple. And whole your at it explain how West, Cain, Rubio, Haley and Jindle do so well with your so called racist right wing.

"Don't you think he genuinely wants to do those things but can't really right now? Don't you think he is playing it safe to win over the undecideds and centrists so he can get a second term to push through the things he really wants? I feel like that is what is going on. It is what conservatives are scared to death of and what progressives are hoping for."

This is a possibility, and if this is the case, it just shows another flaw of our current political environment. Regardless, I still think I am still justified in not thinking he is a good president. Why couldn't he have just did what he thought was good for the country in the first place?

@markust123 Dude, just stop. You are still into partisan politics. Admit it. On every damn post on this site you go on and on about how you don't get caught up in politics. Stop trying to act above everyone else just because you claim to not get caught up in partisan politics. If you truly believe you are non-partisan than you are just lying to yourself.

Also, @HolyGod Either way, Bush's scores were still more or less close to Obama's. What I was trying to point out is that, as an individual, Bush is actually a lot more intelligent than most people who call him retarded. Anyways, to answer your question about Obama, it's not whether or not he can or can't. It's that he knows fully well that the claims he makes aren't even within the power of the president. In short, he's a media whore. I'd rather him focus on elaborating what he could do AS PRESIDENT to best serve this country. If people want laws passed, they need to look towards congress.

By all means disagree with his politics.

But it's more than that. He isn't leftist or socialist or a muslim. He wasn't born out of this country. He isn't the most liberal president in history. The facts just don't back that up. So where is it coming from if not his race?

The tea party people sat by and watched Bush add more to the national debt than any president in history. They watched him start the bailout and spend tons of money. They never held a protest or picked up a sign. But then a few months into Obama's term all of a sudden those issues mattered to them. How else do you explain that?

I thought Bush was terrible. If you asked me why I would list dozens of specific things he did. I wouldn't just say he's the most conservative president of all time. But when people say bad things about Obama, in my experience they can very rarely say much of anything that they are specifically upset about that he has done.

I welcome people

OK. You may disagree with his opinions, but the guy is bright. You can't very well call him an idiot, but fine, let's say that is subjective. How is he a hypocrite?

Breitbardt's blog ran an article loosely saying Bush's SAT scores MAY have been higher than Obama's because Bush's SAT score was higher than the average SAT score of the incoming class of 60 or so that Obama was a part of. As far as I know or could find Obama has never released his transcripts or scores. Then a bunch of right wing or anti-Obama blogs and Fox News ran it as if it was saying Bush outscored Obama. Then you come in here and repeat it as fact. That is why partisan politics sucks.

I was really into the negative world of partisan politics near the tail end of Bush's last term. It cracks me up how conservatives are rewriting history and saying they didn't like Bush when he was president. At the time they couldn't have loved him more.

I'm not COMPLETELY progressive, myself. So, I don't support EVERYTHING Obama claims to support anyways, but I'd have a lot more respect for him if he did even half of the things he claims he can do in front of the camera.

@FoolsPrussia Fair enough, but do you think that Obama will not try to aggressively appear more progressive once he gets re-elected? I'm not necessarily saying that he will DO anything progressive. I don't know, Obama seems to like media attention a bit too much for my taste. Of course it's the president's job to a certain degree, but some of the things he's made comments about were really none of his business. Anyways, back to the main topic: Let's look at the whole 99% Wall Street thing. Obama came in front of the media and talked about how he supported the 99% mobs. Yet, he himself accepts A LOT of donations from these big corporations. Is he not part of the problem, then? The 99%'ers sure didn't think so. In fact they seemed to pin it ALL on the big corporations and publicans (which is partly deserved). I don't know, I'm just really off-put by Obama because I hear about all the things he says and supports, and everyone talks about he is bringing change to America, and

@eddy: Thanks for the civil response. You never know what you're going to get here.

I consider myself a progressive voter, and I'm mostly disappointed in him. I don't really agree that he's trying to appear more moderate for the election. If anything, I think he's tried to present himself as more progressive in both election cycles than how he has actually governed as president. Most of what he's done as president has been pragmatic, which is a quality I admire in a way, but sometimes his desire to be pragmatic has resulted in capitulation. Suddenly he's campaigning against Wall Street, even though he's done nothing to prosecute them during his presidency (Teddy Roosevelt, he is not).

Plus, all the other issues I mentioned earlier are major disappointments (even though I had to hold my nose on his Afghanistan policy in 2008).

mind that Obama will actually be trying to appear more moderate than he actually is, due to the election. That's how it's worked for the past several years. When the candidates are seeking nominations from their parties, they all run to the extreme sides, when they are competing against one other person, they run towards the middle. It's kind of stupid, if you ask me, and is just a shortcoming of our dumb political system. There shouldn't even be a left or right side, politicians should just make decisions about what they think is best for the country (or even state they represent) on individual issues, not have a set response to all of them.

"Give me a break. A couple days ago you and I had a pretty stimulating discussion about Lincoln. I think that should have displayed to you that I have more knowledge of the political history of the U.S. than most of our fellow citizens. "

I'm sorry, that was harsh, and I don't always pay attention to names on this site. Anyways, I know what Obama's done, and that's partly why I don't really care for him. For his very, very short time as a Senator though, I believe he was pretty consistently left of the party line, and everything he claims to stand for and support is on the left side and intended to further ignite the flamewars between the pubs and dems. I give him props for trying to compromise with the healthcare bill, but it just ended up being garbage anyways. Also, I have never made the claim that anyone is 'socialist'. Socialism may be what you get when you go to the extreme left, but I doubt we'll ever see a president like that in the near future. Also, keep in

@HolyGod I said comparatively. You can't expect a politician to not be a lying sleazebag. I was saying that, overall, Bush isn't anywhere near the worst in the personality department. Hell, he's hated by pretty much all of American, and he's basically just accepted it. He hasn't tried to go in front of the news and come up with excuses or explain himself, he's just dealt with it. As for the test scores, I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I've seen that from some pretty reliable sources. I'll get back to you if I have time.

'Do you actually even know anything about the history of the two parties or are you just spouting off nonsense?'

Give me a break. A couple days ago you and I had a pretty stimulating discussion about Lincoln. I think that should have displayed to you that I have more knowledge of the political history of the U.S. than most of our fellow citizens.

Let's see, what has Obama done? He surged in Afghanistan. He's kept the drone strikes going. He kept the drug war going strong. He has deported more illegal immigrants than George Bush ever did. He created a health care plan that is essentially the same as the plan Republicans proposed in the 1990s, a plan that essentially gives private healthcare companies more customers.

How are any of those policies left wing or socialist in any shape or form?

I agree that Maher is a sleazebag. I posted this link because he basically says what I think a lot of people on the left feel. I don't always agree with Maher, and I certainly don't agree with the manner in which he usually says it.

Eddy666- His track record as a senator? He was a senator for 163 days...he was not a senator long enough to have a track record...
