In order to get rid of unhealthy fat from foods manufacturers took out the fat from many processed foods. This left the food tasting more like cardboard without the gloriously tasty fat. So they added more of the two best things we like to eat: sugar and salt.
Well, if you eat alot of salt you get constriction problems in your arteries and veins and extra sugar punches the hell out of your pancreas, liver, and is quickly deposited into fat. Like alcohol beverages, sugar bloats and destroys the body. I heard this all explained by UCSF En Dr Lustig UCSF

This is very misleading. Even if the portion sizes were that much smaller (no reference given, so who knows), it doesn't mean people ate any less. They just ordered more food.
The obesity problems in our society have much less to do with portion sizes than they with do our increasing sedentary lifestyles and the the frequency that we eat unhealthy food. Eating fast food is far more common now than it was in the 50s.

idk about anyone else but I don't think I've ever gotten a 42 oz drink that I wasn't sharing with someone, or some people >>;
I don't mind getting a large if I'm going to be in the car for a long time, I nurse that thing for hours. but lately I've been getting water instead of cokes, of course you get the dixie sized cups when you want water |

junkaddy, same for me. I always get a small because anything larger is wayyy too much unless it's just water.
I rarely eat fastfood or eat out in general tbh, and whenever I go out and have a meal I always have trouble eating it all. I feel bad not eating it all because it feels like I'm wasting money, but I have no idea when or how serving sizes got so large. For most places I'm full after only eating half when I didn't even order a lot :S |

My grandma was telling me about how it was unheard of, back when my mom was a girl, for people to even get refills. I was like whaaaaa? How did you guarantee you washed everything down! Seems people really were tougher back then |

Actually, I am familiar with the silver content of certain coin currency in our history, and there are actually guys like the SilverFuturist who hoard them (can't find the video, but this one's exemplary of his eccentric persona and mentions the wartime nickel halfway through). Last time I ordered a medium drink at Burger King, I nearly asked the cashier if she was sure she'd given me the right size cup. The thing was HUGE. I always order a small, no matter where I go, otherwise it takes all day to get through the drink. |

Deceptive chart. They increased the size in two dimensions, making, for example, the soda on the right 6 times higher and 6 times wider, so that it's pictured as 36 times the size of the one on the left. |

I was there. I used to get 6.5 oz. Cokes for a dime out of the machine at the barber shop. Of course, that was a SILVER dime which today is worth over $2. |
