Sunday, May 20, 2012 3:00:09 PM The human brain is hardwired to recognize subtleties in faces. By not focusing on them directly your brain doesn't get the chance to translate them into faces, so instead you're getting the 'shape' version which looks far stranger because you're consciously aware that it's a recognizable face. Same thing's going on with those 'inverted-face' illusions that kind make sense until you turn them upside down. What you see is what your brain naturally interprets in a meaningful way, so the poo-eating grin of Tom Cruise looks fine on an inverted face, but suddenly doesn't make sense in the greater perceptive context of a correctly oriented face. Incidentally, this is why it's very hard NOT to look left or right. Your brain really REALLY wants to make sense of it. |

Sunday, May 20, 2012 12:05:57 PM @mantistador; as far as i can guess with my relitive low scientific knowledge is that there's a spot in your vision that your brain makes up colours for, this is where one of the nerves connect to where your eyes pick up an image. if you move closer to the pictures they don't do this. so im guessing it's just your brain making poo up because it liturally cannot see the whole face. |

Saturday, May 19, 2012 8:29:51 PM Works pretty well for me even if I look away for a second, and then the faces return to normal. If it doesn't work you fail at focusing. It's really weird because it's like my mind is trying to combine the faces to make something freaky. |

Saturday, May 19, 2012 7:21:16 PM The trick only work if you really concentrate on the cross in the middle, if you look left or right is not working. This experiment is done to show us how our peripheral view is fallacious. |

Saturday, May 19, 2012 4:20:33 PM I must be missing something....what was supposed to happen? All the pictures looked totally normal to me. Aren't they supposed to flash by a lot faster than this to have an effect? There was plenty of time to fixate and even recognize each celebrity. |

Saturday, May 19, 2012 2:16:28 PM Human eye is so much fun to experiment with. Watching people walk with your head between your legs revealing just how bouncy we all are. Looking into an isolation box (One that even prevents you from seeing your own nose.) and interpreting a dark grey scene as pure white because the human eye will call the brightest object it can see, no matter how dark it is, white. Non destructive experiments on the human body are always fascinating. Playing with the idea of a 20 hour day or a 28 hour day for months at a time. Darpa funded non mechanical projects are almost always weird ways of altering how we function in war. Pretty fun stuff. |
