Friday, May 18, 2012 12:26:21 PM In the early days of movies they used large sails on poles to reflect light onto the subjects. The poles were akin to the boom and gaff rig on a sailboat so the man who operated the reflecting sails was called a gaffer. Since that time, the lead lighting electrician on a movie set has been the gaffer.
