Now I could be wrong, but I believe Gaffer is an old old wooden ship that was used during the civil war era. |

Nicely done Thonious. Natural light reflectors are actually still commonly used today in outdoor shoots and range from small disks to units held up with heavy equipment.

In the early days of movies they used large sails on poles to reflect light onto the subjects. The poles were akin to the boom and gaff rig on a sailboat so the man who operated the reflecting sails was called a gaffer. Since that time, the lead lighting electrician on a movie set has been the gaffer.

Gaffer just means boss, just as chef also means boss. Both have become attached to specific jobs. |
