The idea is old, but the execution was brilliant.

This reminds me of when I was a kid, my father hooked the tv up to an old bicycle; If you wanted to watch, you had to pedal. He was pretty smug about the whole thing until my sister- who went on to earn an electrical engineering degree- disabled the switch that allowed him to alternate between pedal power and the wall outlet.
After supper one evening, he went to switch on the tv- and got nothing. He fiddled with the switch, to the growing amusement of us kids- still nothing. My eldest brother handed our father one of those trouser leg clips for bicyclists and asked what's on that's good?
The tv was restored manufacturer's specs the next day.
Amusingly, a few years later my father had the idea of building a small grain mill using the pedal power idea, for my mother. The look she gave him when he 'surprised' her with it was priceless. She laughed and said he'd starve before she got on 'that contraption'.
He scrapped that idea as well.
