Friday, May 11, 2012 10:43:16 PM Besides, who cares if it wasn't written by Einstein, or if it was a stupid "post me if you found the answer" thingie, or if it was vague. It was still fun to do :) And if the German guy didn't own a fish, well, he's the only one who don't say what animal he got. Was fun :) Tx for the quick challenge. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 10:40:02 PM Yep, just did it, 4 Green German Coffee Prince Fish won it ... The only thing I "guessed" was the left side going towards the first one. So I agree with everyone who guessed this too. :) I guess my hours at Sudoku won the day ;) |

Friday, May 11, 2012 9:53:48 PM And yes, my point was that the original was meant to trick people into thinking they had enough information to solve the puzzle when they didn't. I guess that this version does as well. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 9:51:06 PM @darkmagic14n My bad, I should have actually tried to do the puzzle before commenting. I had thought it had been established that the german owned the fish, and you were questioning lsdmole's comment because this version had been solved. After rereading, I see that this version doesn't mention a fish in the clues either. I was the one who misunderstood. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 8:25:30 PM unless you mean it tricks others into THINKING they can solve it, and then you would be right. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 8:22:41 PM This version has been changed so that you can determine that the German owns the fish. like I said, you're wrong. it doesn't help you determine the german owns the fish because: 1) the clues are vague, (does the norwegian live on the left or the right, is the green house next door to the white or just in the left direction (2 houses down), cat/water =/= same person 2) the clues never say anything about owning a fish (see also your zebra point) |

Friday, May 11, 2012 8:20:02 PM And the prize goes to ... ... Viking864 for seeing the bigger picture and not getting caught up in the tedium of a silly puzzle that wasn't written by Einstein. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 7:22:58 PM @darkmagic14n but you're wrong about it being solvable, just read some of the comments You misunderstand, the original puzzle was published in some magazine. It asked who owned the zebra, but never mentions a zebra in the clues. Since it never specified that someone did in fact own a zebra, the correct answer was to say that no one necessarily owned a zebra. This version has been changed so that you can determine that the German owns the fish. |

Pretty sure this solution is unique, given the number of variables and the number of clues |

Friday, May 11, 2012 4:20:52 PM It says "on the left", not "to the left". There's a difference. Another version also states "next to and left of" to clarify. Following the rules you'll find one single non-trivial answer for which one is the only possible fish-owner. It's good fun too :) |

Friday, May 11, 2012 3:52:59 PM @Gerry1of1 it also doesn't state that the Norwegian lived in the leftmost house. what if you approached from the other direction? the Norwegian could be the first house on the right, and the blue house is next door to him (again, doesn't specify that its to his left or right, just "next door") |

Friday, May 11, 2012 3:27:57 PM The five pets are not listed. Since the fifth pet is not mentioned in any of the hints, there's no way of knowing if that fifth pet is a fish or something else entirely. So, no one owns the fish. It lives in the nearby lake. The Dane owns a gerbil. |

Friday, May 11, 2012 3:10:55 PM This wasn't meant to be solvable. Someone has added extra data to allow it to be done. Einstein wanted you to think about the nature of things, not solve stupid riddles. |
