"Unless you've been there and done that or know someone who has, you just can't know."

Then I can speak from knowledge...they are inspiring {in a sad, hairless kind of way} but alas, the word "hero" is misused here. That does not detract from their struggle. It's just not accurate.

I've been through this, we aren't heroes. The doctors and scientists are, they're the ones we owe our lives to. If we end up surviving, all we are is lucky.

'Unless you've been there and done that or know someone who has, you just can't know. You really can't.'

Just wanna chime in here- my grandfather died of Lung Cancer a few years ago. He fought in Vietnam and won himself a Purple Heart, was a morally upstanding role-model and a beacon of integrity to everyone who knew him. He proved that through his actions throughout his life. It was the Agent Orange and Asbestos/Fiberglass from years of hard manual labour that finally got him (plus about 50 years of cigarettes). Quite literally, a hero is a person that others rely on for their sense of morality based on the deeds they've done. A hero is someone who has proven their honour through 'heroic acts'.

I'm sorry, but getting sick and dealing with it in and of itself is not heroic. These kids have courage and perseverance, but they're not quite heroes.
I'm not saying I don't feel bad for them, I can't imagine what it's like to face your morality on such a drawn-out basi

Uh, patch? I beg to differ. They are heroes. Unless you've been there and done that or know someone who has, you just can't know. You really can't.

My grandfather battled prostate cancer and lived. But that doesn't make him some hero.

So we're redefining "hero" now? Whatever. Epic.

Small people who know nothing about heroism don't understand what these kids are. Poor little ones. Yes, I'm talking about both groups.

They kind of are heroes in a way. No having an illness doesn't make you a hero but I guess having courage to try and keep living makes you a hero. But does that mean every kid in Africa is too?

What a bunch of A-holes... Of course these kids are heroes. I had my pediatric rotation at Seattle Children's and the nurses there as well as the kiddos are incredible. I learned from them about what real adversity is.

Having cancer doesn't make you a hero. Sure this is inspiring, but heroes they are not.

He is a hero:

Hero- a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
Bravery (also boldness, fearlessness, mettle, fortitude, or intrepidity) is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.
