It's because in China there's this strange "morale" code people have over there about being generous.
I travel and often give the odd quid to someone like many other people do. It's really only important because it's in China. |

I'm not sure I understand the chinese concept of "scammers." I mean, you aid someone in need, and they ask for more, does that make them a scammer? Do they not know they can refuse? If the person doesn't truly need the aid, are those who offered it now in destitute? |

Everyone there will spout the same nonsense about worrying about scammers as an excuse to not lift a finger. There is virtually no respect for life in that country and it pervades every aspect of their culture. I saw children casually kicking small animals while their parents laughed. (I would find ways to intervene, talk to the kid about the animal, and then place it somewhere they couldn't torture it.)
I would see a pregnant woman struggling down the steps to the subway with a suitcase while everyone cursed under their breath that she was holding up the line. (I took her bags and helped her down.)
I am not really that nice of a person, but so many there just have no basic respect for life. I would ask my students there about helping people and they would all give the same excuse for not helping - they might be scamming. (Even those with luggage: they might ask me for money.)

@MeGrendel: Agreed. I suppose the nay-sayers in China are thinking that giving to scammers increases the likelihood of more scammers, but I don't think that's really an issue in China, since there are so many already. |

@Gerry1of1- Kid goes to college- and is doing well, speaks at least two languages, wants to work in a sports related industry, is fairly clean cut and apparently has money- I just gotta ask: Have you ever even SEEN a hippie? |
