Saturday, May 05, 2012 5:47:49 PM @Angilion well, you are super smart. Why are you pretending to think that being able to understand the extremely simple rules governing the correct use of apostrophes in English is claiming to be "super smart"? You aren't as stupid as you're pretending to be and I'm not fooled by your pretence. Nice try, but it didn't work. Try again sometime. |

Saturday, May 05, 2012 5:45:14 PM Most people add the ' by accident because they are not paying attention/care. Bollocks. It's far too simple for that. Maybe someone who knew might not pay even the fleeting amount of attention required if they were drugged out of their minds, but not otherwise. They don't seem to realise that everyone knows this and still does it wrong. You don't seem to realise that you're wrong. They also missed afew things. For instance plural ownership ex. Churches' housing estates. You missed reading my post, since I wrote "in almost all cases", i.e. explicitly stated that it didn't cover every case. But that's not news, since if you had read my post you wouldn't have replied to some other post that existed only in your head. |

I like how pretentious(probably spelt wrong but I'm not gonna check cuz I have better things to do) Angilion is. They don't seem to realise that everyone knows this and still does it wrong. Saturday, May 05, 2012 6:27:10 AM @Angilion well, you are super smart. so if you think that's what i'm implying then it must be true. It couldn't possibly be that i pointed out what a douche you are and you're grasping at straws to try to save any bit of face you have left... could it? In any case, don't worry - this thread will drop off the main page soon and no one will realize what a douche (i mean - how super smart) you are. |

Saturday, May 05, 2012 2:14:30 AM BlankTom, thanks for providing an example of how important it is to read a thread before replying to a post in it, in order to understand the context. If you'd done that, you wouldn't have posted irrelevant rubbish that makes you look silly. You are now arguing that a large number of people, including fancyclad, didn't go to school at all. |

Friday, May 04, 2012 8:09:54 PM @Angilion Wow! you're super smart! I mean, we all learned that in grade school but you were able to communicate it so clearly - and provide examples! What can 't you do?! Do you think you can help me with my maths too? Like, say if i have 3 applies and someone gives me another 4 apples, how many do i have? My friend says to just count the number of open ends in the number but then i come up with 5, but my accountant says that's wrong. Seesh, life is so hard. But not for you, though, right? You must be like the president of some sort of awesome company. |

Friday, May 04, 2012 4:56:33 PM Why are a significant number of people able to write English to at least some extent but unable to use apostrophes in anything vaguely approaching the correct way? It's strange because in almost all cases the correct use of apostrophes in English is governed by just three extremely simple rules(*). I'm sure that all the people who can't use them correctly are able to get much more complicated things right, like doing up their shoelaces or using a microwave oven. * 1) Use an apostophe to indicate missing letters, e.g. can not --> can't. 2) Use an apostrophe to indication possession or association, e.g. Bob's phone, Kate's parents. 3) Don't use an apostrophe for anything else. |
