I heard, he shot himself in the chest so his brain could be examined for the disorder they're finding in former players. I can't describe how sad that is.

R.I.P Mr. Seau. Check ya on the filp side. Truly sad that one can feel so tortured and helpless that they would take their own life. Life can be so friggin harsh sometimes. Too bad

This is always terrible to hear. I don't follow football so I didn't know who he was, but I know how stunned all Canucks fans were to hear about Rick Rypien...Suicide is never the answer, so pardon me for being that guy for just a few moments.

A truly sad day. He was one of the most exciting people to watch play the game. I will miss him.

Sad day in the world of football. Lost a close friend six months ago to suicide. I'm usually not one to preach, but please never take the easy wait out. Seek help.

wow...so sorry t hear about this.

I work in mental health and repeated head trauma can cause major changes to the brain and cause people to become suicidal.

I also played football up through college and still have some lasting injuries, thankfully not to the head but I can honestly say that the technology behind the helmets is nowhere good enough to stop major injuries to the head.

as the players have gotten bigger and faster/stronger, the equipment has not advanced enough to compensate.

I also play rugby when lived in Kenya and you rarely see these types of injuries in that sport because the only person on the pitch that can get hit is the ball carrier and because there is little to no padding, head on hits are rare. Most tackles are down from the side with the arms as players do not do so well when they collide head to head without a helmet.

last summer there were a string of deaths by NHL hockey players (Wade Belak, Rick Rypien and Derek Boogard). THey were all known to be tough guys/fighters and have all had concussion issues from countless blows to the head. Belak and Rypien both committed suicide while Boogard died of an acidental overdose (i believe it was from the medication he was taking due to his concussion). It looks as if concussions could play a huge role in depression, and pro sports leagues that feature a lot of head contact will have to invest themselves into discovering if this holds true, as well as changing rules (NHL has already started this).
RIP

Link: NFL Legend Junior Seau Dead At 43 [Pic+] [Rate Link] - Seau found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound this morning. Early rumor is that head-trauma from playing was factor.
