Saturday, May 05, 2012 6:05:45 PM "How can he be going that fast on a bike? Somebody please explain this." For objects travelling in a fluid at low velocities characterised by a low Reynolds number (Re<1), drag force is roughly proportional to velocity. As velocity increases, so does drag force (Fd), until further acceleration due to propulsion force (Fp) is no longer possible as Fd approaches Fp. Drafting in the burble behind a large moving truck reduces the effective Fd so that the equilibrium point Fd=Fp occurrs at a higher velocity. Youtube video John Howard (not the politician) earned a world speed record cycling at 152.2mph while drafting. You wouldn't want to lose control at that speed in bike shorts. |

Saturday, May 05, 2012 5:21:49 PM Definitely cool, but the guy is a total idiot. No helmet, really??? A wipe out at those speeds and his brain is splattered all over the highway. It would be bad enough with a helmet, but without it's just a death wish. A bicycle helmet wouldn't make any useful difference at that speed. It might make a difference if the combined speed was much lower. Say, for example, the lorry suddenly slowed to 50. He'd hit it at ~15mph and then a helmet would matter...although he'd probably then hit the road at ~50mph and the helmet wouldn't matter. It's a striking display of how much difference drafting can make to a cyclist, but it's a damn silly thing to do. |

Saturday, May 05, 2012 12:09:33 PM Why wear a helmet. He doesn't have much smarts to protect with one. Why is it that bicycle riders feel that they dont have to follow the law? And why does anybody have sympathy when one dies? |
