The "minority" is everyone who is not white. yes, the "Minority" outweighs the "majority", the white people. But the Black population, the Hispanic population, and Asian population, alone do not outnumber the white population. |

I love Louis CK but this is far from him at his best:
What the stat means is 80 percent of New Yorkers are minorities in terms of the US at large.
Also, just because you put a bunch of smaller groups into a big category called "minorities" it doesn't mean any of those groups isn't a minority. If I have 2 bananas, one orange, one apple and one pineapple, the bananas are still the largest group.
Speaking of which, you should eat more fruit. |

haha yeah... I haven't heard any mexicans in Mexico trying to make a racial distinction based on nationality... maybe racism infects them once they get to the US, the latinos in Vancouver certainly don't seem like they're trying to differentiate like that...
I think it's hilarious that the US Census defines "american" as "hispanic" AND "not-hispanic" |

They say that because latinos claim there's a differance between guatemalans and niceraguans, and both are differant from panamanians. The nationality is differant, but the racial makeup is the same.

No, all pooled together 80% of the people belong to some minority. It's still not a majority because it's a bunch of small groups. If 80% of the people were Asian or Mexican, THEN it wouldn't be a minority. But a group of Asians, Mexicans, Russians, Greeks, and whatever else is still a bunch of minorities.
Stupid post is stupid, just like the stupid "comedian" (and I use that word very loosely with him) who made the stupid comments. |

@darkmagic14n I haven't got the slightest clue, it's from wikipedia but the graph itself isn't fully explained.
My best guess is that they've been so mixed up for so long it's hard to tell, making the "race" something different. But that's a stretch from saying that's what it is. |

most of the "african" in the south probably qualify just as much as the whites for 'american', same with most of the rest of the country, with southern border, east and west coast having the only coloration |

yes, its a flawed system because, seriously, why does race still matter? if you talk to someone online and you have no idea what race they are, would you feel differently about them if you met them in person? |

Here's a handy chart (from wikipedia, based on the US 2000 Census), as to the purpose of the joke, for those who missed it or argue against it. Sure in general it's decidedly mostly white, but it's a white thing to think that's how it is everywhere.

If the other 80% is asian, persian, native american, etc why is the 20% not italian, german, british, etc (& how does jewish/immigrants fit in at all? jews can't be white? immigrants can't be white?). Why just "white" if you're going to break everyone else down more specifically. It's a skewed statistic. |

@auburnjunkie; that's exactly what I mean when I say maybe white people have used segregation irresponsibly in the past, and hence lost the privilege to do it... or at least public tolerance to it.
It's for example, we still have women's only stuff, but if you tried to make a men-only gym, it would be called out. That's because men in the past have abused the privilege of segregation against women.
Again, this is all "maybe", "probably", it's just what my only intelligent response was to that question yesterday during a stroll. But the more I think about it the more it makes sense. |
